Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 162

Julian pulled a velvet box from his suit's inner pocket. The deep blue surface gleamed delicately under the living room lights. He placed the box into Evelyn's palm.

"It's the necklace you wanted before. See if you like it."

Evelyn opened the box. A platinum necklace lay against the black velvet, its pendant a teardrop diamond whose facets caught the light, refracting brilliant, shattered beams.

She recognized it instantly. She had merely taken a second look at it in a mall window and casually mentioned it to Julian. She never expected him to remember.

Overcome with emotion, she hugged his waist, resting her forehead against his solid chest, her voice catching in her throat. She knew it—Julian still deeply cared for her.

"Thank you, Julian. I really love it."

Julian patted her shoulder. His voice vibrated from deep within his chest, resonating against her ear, sounding far calmer than when he had first stormed through the door.

"Evelyn, Sean Sutton just died. You need to be careful with your actions lately. Don't get too close to anyone else, or you'll look highly suspicious."

Evelyn buried her face in his chest, completely unable to suppress her smile.

Julian was jealous. He hated seeing her with other men.

"Don't worry, Julian. You're the only one in my heart." Evelyn lifted her head from his chest, her voice meltingly soft. "Can you come shopping with me tomorrow?"

Julian glanced down at his watch, frowning slightly before refusing.

"Not tomorrow. I have things to handle."

Evelyn lowered her eyes in disappointment but didn't press him on what he had to do. Her smile stiffened. Before she could say another word, Julian had already turned toward the door.

Evelyn chased after him barefoot, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind. She could feel the muscles in his back tense slightly at her touch.
