Hazel's footsteps paused for a moment, a faint smile surfacing on her face. "There's still work to do at the Institute. Julian and I will come back together later."
Grandma Hayes let her gaze rest on Hazel's face for a moment.
Hazel's expression was calm, and her smile looked completely natural. Grandma Hayes didn't notice anything amiss and simply offered some affectionate advice.
"Alright, be careful out there. It's not safe being out this late."
Hazel walked to the door, changed her shoes, and glanced back at the older woman, an inexplicable wave of anxiety washing over her.
"Thank you, Grandma Hayes."
The door clicked shut behind her. Gripping her bag, she walked down the steps and left without looking back.
Meanwhile.
Julian parked his car below Evelyn's apartment building. He stepped out, slammed the door, and strode into the elevator. By the time the doors opened, he was already standing outside Evelyn's unit.
The door swung open. Evelyn stood in the entryway wearing a silk nightgown, her hair cascading down her shoulders. Her face was makeup-free, her lips slightly parted as if she were about to speak.
Julian pushed past her, stepping into the living room. He scanned the area, pushed open the bedroom door for a quick look, and then marched to the balcony, yanking the floor-to-ceiling curtains wide open.
No one was there.
He turned around. Evelyn was leaning against the door, watching him, her eyes brimming with their usual deep affection.
"Julian, what are you looking for?"
Julian's expression darkened. "Evelyn, did you agree to it?"
