She closed her mouth and sat back down. Forget it, she would deal with it tonight.
Sitting at her own desk, Evelyn watched the entire exchange unfold, her knuckles turning white from gripping her pen so tightly.
Why did Marcus look at Hazel with such high regard? How was she any worse than her? Her degrees were just as good, her resume was just as strong, and they were even the same height.
Yet, Marcus's eyes never lingered on her for more than a second.
She grabbed her phone and opened her chat with Julian.
"Julian, I heard there's a banquet tonight. Can you take me with you?"
The reply popped up almost instantly.
"Sure."
Evelyn slammed her phone face-down on the desk and let out a breath. She absolutely could not miss an event like this.
That evening.
Hazel changed into a lavender gown that draped down to her ankles, flawlessly accentuating her stunning curves.
Stepping out of the dressing room, she caught a glimpse of herself in the hallway mirror before heading to the main entrance to wait.
A black Porsche Cayenne approached from the underground garage and slowly pulled up in front of her. The window rolled down, revealing Marcus's face from the dark interior. The streetlamps traced the sharp, handsome lines of his jaw.
His gaze paused on her for a fraction of a second before darting away. "Get in."
For a moment, Hazel felt a sense of déjà vu. In the dim light of the car, with half his face cast in shadow and the other illuminated by the streetlamp, his stern profile suddenly reminded her of Zachary Ward.
She realized she hadn't seen Zachary in a while and wondered what he was up to.
"What are you waiting for? Get in."
