Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 141

"Hand the letter back to Hazel right now."

Evelyn's smile completely vanished. "Mr. Thornton—"

Marcus arched an eyebrow. "Is that too difficult? Then you can clear out your desk."

A suffocating wave of anger washed over Evelyn. He was threatening her job over a stupid letter? Since when did Marcus protect anyone like this?

She clenched her jaw, forcefully swallowing back her bitter resentment.

"Fine. I'll go get it."

Hazel let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. She glanced at Marcus, who was already flipping through a stack of documents as if the confrontation hadn't even happened.

"Thank you, Mr. Thornton."

Marcus didn't pause his reading, letting out a dry scoff. "Since when did you become such a coward, Hazel?"

Her fingers curled inward.

He looked up, his predatory gaze filled with undisguised mockery. "You let people walk all over you and your only solution is to quit. If you directed even half of your energy into fighting back, do you think they'd still dare to cross you?"

Hazel lowered her gaze, remaining silent.

"Are you still resigning?" he asked.

She gave a slight nod, then hesitated and shook her head.

Marcus chuckled. "What is that supposed to mean? Are we playing charades?"

She stayed quiet for a moment.

Her mind drifted through the recent chaos, every relentless disaster seemingly orbiting around her.

"A lot has happened since I joined Apex Holdings," she said evenly. "I think this place might be the root of the problem. If I step away, maybe things will finally settle down."

Marcus leaned back in his chair, a smirk playing on his lips. "What, so you're throwing in the towel?"
