Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 140

When Evelyn received the summons to the top floor, a thrill of anticipation raced through her. Riding the elevator up, she even checked her reflection, smoothing her hair behind her ears and adjusting her collar to look perfect.

Mr. Thornton rarely called employees up to his private office unless it was for a major promotion. Considering the recent shakeups in the lab and the fact that Hazel was on her way out, a smug smile tugged at Evelyn's lips.

The CEO was probably going to formally offer her the team lead position.

The assistant pushed the heavy doors open, stepping aside to let her in.

Evelyn had barely taken half a step inside, her practiced smile fully on display, when her eyes landed on Hazel.

Evelyn's footsteps faltered. Why was this bitch literally everywhere?

She cursed Hazel out in her head, but seamlessly shifted her expression into a sweeter, more innocent look.

She walked up to the massive desk and stood perfectly still, dipping her chin in a display of flawless submission.

"Mr. Thornton, you asked to see me. Is there something you need?"

Marcus leaned back in his leather chair, tapping a single finger against the armrest. He cut straight to the kill. "Did you steal Hazel's letter?"

Evelyn's smile instantly froze.

How did he know? Did Hazel run her mouth? How dare that bitch drag her personal drama into the CEO's office! Just what exactly was going on between the two of them?!

Hazel had promised not to breathe a word to anyone—especially Julian—yet she had instantly sold her out!

Evelyn's teeth ground together in fury, but her momentary panic vanished under her practiced mask of innocence.

Marcus's frigid voice echoed through the silence. "I asked you a question. Are you deaf?"
