Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 138

The moment Hazel sat down at her desk, her phone vibrated.

It was a text from Marcus: The delayed corporate banquet is tonight. The invitation is with you.

She stared at the screen for two seconds, suddenly remembering the invite. The massive scandal from earlier in the month all traced back to that single slip of paper.

Since she hadn't officially left the company yet, she couldn't exactly refuse. Hazel typed two words and hit send: Got it.

Upstairs in his massive office, Marcus leaned back in his leather chair, staring at the short reply on his screen.

Just two words.

His brow furrowed. When she was at his house the other night, she hadn't been this cold. Why the sudden freeze-out? Was she planning to get back together with Julian?

The moment that thought surfaced, an irritating tightness gripped his chest.

He stood up and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window. The entire corporate campus stretched out beneath him—the R&D center, the testing grounds, the manicured gardens, the parking lot. All of it belonged to him.

He couldn't fathom why Hazel would want to quit. Apex Holdings offered the highest compensation in the industry, possessed state-of-the-art tech, and he had personally handpicked her team.

She was doing perfectly well here, then suddenly decided to pack up and leave. After turning it over in his mind, the only logical explanations left were Julian Hayes and Evelyn Vance.

Marcus grabbed his phone and called his assistant. "Look into Evelyn's recent activities."

"Right away, Mr. Thornton."

He hung up, tossed the phone back onto his desk, and looked out the window. The sky was already growing dark.

When it was time to clock out, Hazel stood up and headed for the elevator. Just as she stepped into the main lobby, a figure darted out and blocked her path.

Evelyn crossed her arms, a sickeningly sweet smile on her lips. "Hazel, you're practically out the door, yet you're still sneaking up to the CEO's office? Are you trying to seduce him? Aren't you worried your precious Julian will find out and get mad?"

Hazel stared at her blankly. "I thought you loved picking up my trash. I already gave him to you. Why aren't you keeping him on a tighter leash?"
