Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 134

...

Evelyn stood by the door. The moment she saw Julian step out of the elevator, a bright smile bloomed on her face.

She stepped forward, opening her arms for a hug. Julian smoothly shifted to the side, causing her embrace to meet empty air.

Evelyn's arms hung frozen midair, and her smile stiffened.

But she quickly masked it, reverting to her gentle demeanor as if nothing had happened.

Julian reached out and patted her head. The motion was light, and his expression remained tender, yet Evelyn could sense a layer of cold detachment beneath the surface. His gentle voice rang in her ears.

"Evelyn, didn't you text me saying you suddenly remembered where the letter is?"

Evelyn forced a smile. "Yes, I just remembered. Come inside, Julian, let's sit down and talk."

Julian walked in and took a seat on the sofa.

Evelyn went into the kitchen and brought out a mug of hot milk. Steam drifted from the rim, a thin layer of condensation forming on the glass.

"Drink some milk first."

Julian took it and set it on the coffee table without taking a sip. He glanced at his watch, appearing strapped for time, though his tone remained mild.

"Just tell me, Evelyn. Don't keep me in suspense. It's getting late, and Hazel is still waiting for me at home. I need to get back quickly to let her know so she doesn't worry."

Hearing him mention Hazel so casually felt like a heavy hand twisting her heart. A bitter jealousy flooded her chest.

Since when did he care so much about Hazel's feelings?

She pressed her lips together and sat across from him, her hands neatly folded in her lap, looking the picture of innocence.

"Julian, I just realized that I might have tossed that letter into the storage room. Tell Hazel to check in there when you get back. She'll definitely find it."

Julian nodded. "Which storage room?"

Evelyn's gaze flickered nervously.

"The... the third room on the right, on the second floor." Her voice was faint, suddenly stricken with guilt. She hadn't expected him to ask for such specific details. "The spare storage room."

Julian stood up. "Alright, I'll head back now. Get some rest."

He paused, then added a few more words.

"Don't take tonight's incident to heart. Evelyn, that was Hazel's most prized possession, so it's only human nature for her to be upset. She isn't normally an explosive person. Once she calms down, you can move back in."

"Julian."
