Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 133

Hazel opened her eyes. At some point, a tear had fallen, landing on the back of her hand.

It was freezing cold against her skin, leaving a wet streak.

She raised her hand to touch her face, only to realize her cheeks were drenched.

But that kind, loving old man had left her just like that.

It had been so long. The professor had been gone for almost two years, yet he had left a letter for her—one she hadn't even had the chance to read.

She didn't even know what he had written.

Was he reminding her to eat well? Was he telling her not to work herself to the bone? Or was he, just like before, going to scold her before softening up to make her a warm meal?

Now, she would never know.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

Hazel looked down. A notification popped up on the screen—a message from Evelyn Vance, containing a photo.

She hadn't planned on responding, but as she glanced down, she caught sight of a line of text in the thumbnail.

Her hand abruptly froze. She tapped the image, and the picture expanded on her screen.

It was a piece of yellowed paper, its edges slightly frayed, looking as though it had been violently crumpled and then smoothed out.

On it were a few lines of writing. The strokes weren't particularly strong and even carried a slight tremor, but the structure of every single character was meticulously neat.

It was the professor's handwriting!

In his later years, his hands had developed a tremor. He couldn't hold a pen as steadily as before, so he wrote every word slowly and with great effort.

She was far too familiar with that handwriting. Just one glance was enough to make her eyes burn.

Evelyn hadn't thrown it away. The letter hadn't been trashed!

With trembling fingers, Hazel clicked into the chat and cut straight to the chase. "Evelyn, what is it going to take for you to give the letter back to me?"

After the message was sent, the chat remained quiet for a few seconds.

Then, an audio message popped up.

Evelyn's voice drifted from the speaker, dripping with amusement. "Hazel, aren't you supposed to be so capable? Weren't you so arrogant? Why are you begging me like a desperate dog now over a single piece of paper?"

Hazel's grip on the phone tightened fiercely, her knuckles turning white. Before she could type a response, Evelyn sent another audio clip.

"Did you really think I'd throw this away? Of course I wouldn't. Why would I ever toss such a perfect weapon to keep you on a leash?"

She let out a laugh at the end of the recording. Just imagining Hazel's agony brought her an indescribable rush of satisfaction.

"See? It worked perfectly, didn't it?"

Hazel's eyes were bloodshot, her teeth grinding together. She wanted nothing more than to march over there right now and wrap her hands around the woman's throat.

But she couldn't. The letter was still in Evelyn's hands.

Hazel's voice shook with suppressed fury as she recorded a reply. "What exactly do you want? Tell me your price."

Evelyn's slow, mocking voice chimed back.
