Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 131

Hazel stood under the streetlamp, her heart numbing with pain as she watched him carefully support Evelyn, brushing the dust off her dress before turning his freezing gaze toward her.

"Since you haven't been living here lately, that letter shouldn't have been delivered here in the first place."

Julian sounded as though he were simply stating a logical fact. "It's only natural that Evelyn didn't know. You have to take responsibility for your own actions. How can you blame someone else for the consequences?"

He paused. "Besides, Evelyn didn't do it on purpose."

Hazel suddenly felt utterly exhausted, drained of even the strength to speak.

She looked up and took a deep, trembling breath.

"Julian."

"Are you just blind, or completely heartless?"

Julian's frown deepened. "What is the point of saying things like that?"

"Does it matter to me whether she did it on purpose?" Hazel stared at him with red-rimmed eyes. "I only care about the result. I don't care about the process."

Her voice gradually chilled, devoid of any fluctuation. "If that letter isn't found, I'll make her pay a devastating price."

"Even if it kills her."

Julian's heart gave a violent tremor.

It felt as if a giant hand had suddenly seized his chest, squeezing tight. Rooted to the spot, he abruptly found it hard to breathe.

When had Hazel ever looked at him with such an expression? It was as if she were looking at a complete stranger.

A dull ache throbbed in his chest, his throat feeling as though it were stuffed with cotton.

Evelyn leaned against his chest, her voice broken by quiet sobs. "Hazel, how can you be so unreasonable? I've already apologized. It's one thing to make things difficult for me, but why do you have to give Julian a hard time?"

"Apologize."

The deep voice echoed in her ear, and Evelyn's crying abruptly stopped. She looked up, her tear-blurred eyes gazing at Julian as if she had misheard him.
