Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 118

"Gideon, go home."

Gideon whipped around, staring at her anxiously. "Hazel, how can you let a complete stranger watch over you? I'm your actual brother!"

Hazel didn't have the energy to argue with him. She let out a slow exhale. Though her voice was soft, it carried an undeniable finality. "I said go, so go. If you go back too late, that woman will just blame me for being a bad influence again."

Hearing this, Gideon felt a sharp pang of sorrow. He knew she meant their mother. Ever since they were kids, no matter what went wrong, their mother always blamed Hazel. She always said he was young and didn't know better, and that Hazel had failed to guide him.

He wanted to defend their mother, but no matter how hard he thought, he couldn't come up with a single valid excuse. He would probably never be able to repair the rift between them, because in Hazel's world, he was the favored child who reaped all the benefits. Her distancing herself from him was completely justified.

But it still broke his heart.

"Hazel, please don't say things like that. I'm your brother. We're family."

Hazel let out a soft laugh, her smile tinged with exhaustion. "Alright, just go home. Text me when you get there."

Gideon stayed silent for a few seconds. He knew his sister's temper; her word was law.

He turned to Marcus, his tone entirely serious. "Please take good care of her. If anything happens, call me immediately."

Marcus chuckled lightly. "Sure."

Reluctantly, Gideon left, looking back at Hazel multiple times before finally walking out the door.

Hazel kept her eyes closed and didn't look at him. Gideon gritted his teeth, turned, and exited, his footsteps fading down the hall.

The emergency room fell silent. Marcus dragged a chair over to the side of the bed, sat down, and crossed his legs. He looked at her with a teasing glint in his eyes. "Why are you so harsh on your brother? He treats you pretty well, even risked his life to rescue you."

Hazel slowly opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling, her cool gaze utterly devoid of emotion. "I don't have any obligation to be nice to him. Since when is Mr. Thornton so interested in other people's family drama?"
