Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 117

On the other end of the line, Mrs. Garrison's gentle, caring voice rang out. "Son, where are you right now? I miss you. When are you coming home? It's so late. It's not safe to be out."

Gideon glanced back at Hazel lying in the hospital bed and frowned.

He was a grown adult—what could possibly be unsafe? She was totally overreacting.

"Mom, Hazel got hurt. I'm at the hospital with her right now," he said.

The moment she heard Hazel's name, Mrs. Garrison's tone sharpened instantly, like an entirely different person. "What? Your sister is hurt? Is it serious?"

Gideon frowned. Looking at the blood-soaked bandages on Hazel's leg, his throat felt tight. "It's pretty bad. That bastard Julian locked her up and wouldn't let her leave. I broke her out."

He spoke with a hint of pride, waiting for his mother to praise him for doing the right thing.

To his shock, Mrs. Garrison went quiet for a second before her voice skyrocketed, shrieking so loud it almost blew out the speaker. "What? Who told you to meddle and break her out?! Gideon, that's her own business! You stay out of it. Listen to me and come home right now!"

Gideon's frown deepened. He stood up and walked to the end of the hallway, keeping his voice as low as possible so his sister wouldn't overhear.

"Mom, she's not even awake yet. How can I go back now and just dump her in the hospital alone? She'd be heartbroken when she wakes up."

Mrs. Garrison's voice carried intense exasperation, rattling off a speech she clearly had prepped. "Your sister is a married woman. That's between her and her husband. Do you have any idea what kind of power the Hayes family wields? Marrying into that family was already reaching way out of her league. If he locked her up, that's his right. It has absolutely nothing to do with us."

She paused and scoffed coldly. "Besides, have you forgotten? Back when you were stuck in the detention center, she refused to help you when we begged her! She doesn't give a damn about you!"
