Hearing this, panic began to rise in Evelyn's chest.
She hadn't expected Julian to be so clear-headed this time. Wasn't he supposed to unconditionally take her side and crush Hazel?
Besides, he was a lawyer. What if he spotted a loophole in her story? Her mind raced as her fingers tightened around the hem of her shirt.
She suddenly felt an intense hatred for Audrey. That stupid woman was utterly useless and always ruined everything!
She lowered her head, swallowed hard, and when she looked back up, a flash of vulnerability crossed her eyes. "Julian, forget it. I don't want to pursue this anymore. Don't blame Hazel either. Let's just let it go. The internet's attention will shift to something else soon enough."
Julian's frown deepened. "No, Evelyn. You don't need to cover for Hazel. I already have her locked up at the house. You just need to tell me everything you want to say, and I'll seek justice for you."
A wave of dizziness washed over Evelyn. She never imagined Julian would go this far.
If she continued to point the finger at Hazel, Julian would definitely launch a thorough investigation. Every little detail would be dragged into the light, and there was no telling if that idiot Audrey would rat her out.
The more she thought about it, the more panicked she became. Her temples throbbed, and her vision began to darken.
"Evelyn? Evelyn, what's wrong?"
Evelyn went limp, collapsing against Julian's shoulder. Her eyes drifted shut, her breathing coming in short, rapid gasps.
Julian quickly caught her. He reached out to feel her forehead, then touched her cheek. Her face was incredibly pale, and her lips had lost all their color.
"Evelyn!" He laid her flat on the sofa, grabbed his phone, and dialed for an ambulance.
Evelyn kept her eyes shut tight, her eyelashes fluttering. She didn't dare open them, terrified Julian would see through the act. She had to fake it until he completely abandoned the idea of investigating the incident.
...
Audrey sat on the bed in her rented room, the glow of her phone screen illuminating her ghastly pale face.
She had been staring at the news for two hours now. The comments kept multiplying, and the situation had completely spiraled out of her control.
She originally only wanted to sabotage Hazel, ruining her reputation and getting her kicked out of the Institute. She never expected the camera would capture Evelyn instead, and she certainly never imagined the video would end up plastered all over the internet!
She chewed on her nails until they were ragged and uneven.
Her mind was a total mess. Should she make a run for it? What if she ran and they caught her anyway?
Evelyn was backed by Julian, and Julian was a high-powered lawyer. Was there anything he couldn't dig up if he wanted to?
The more she thought about it, the more terrified she became. She tossed her phone onto the bed and began pacing nervously around the room.
