Break up...
He had genuinely thought about it in the past, but he could never figure out a foolproof way to do it.
Now, Zachary watched in stunned silence as Audrina dragged out her suitcase and haphazardly stuffed clothes into it.
The Lakewood Villa was supposed to be their marital home, but since she had spent the last few years abroad, very few of her belongings were actually here in the spacious house.
To Audrina, this place wasn't her home.
After zipping the suitcase shut, she picked up her shattered phone.
Finally, she took off her engagement ring, along with the necklace Zachary had just given her today, and set them together on the table.
Dragging her luggage behind her, she didn't cast him a single glance.
He wanted to stop her, but his hand froze mid-air before slowly dropping back to his side.
His throat felt dry. Suddenly, he realized that things were spiraling entirely out of his control.
Just as she was about to step through the door, Zachary grabbed the edge of her sleeve. "It's late. Where are you going? I'll... drive you."
He knew that after a blowout like that, there was no way she was staying.
Audrina was absolutely going to leave.
But looking at her lonely silhouette, for the very first time, a genuine pang of heartache pierced through him.
"No need," Audrina said, yanking her sleeve back without missing a step.
His pleading voice followed her. "Audrina, I was wrong. I'll take care of Vera and the baby. Please, can we not break up? Don't... don't tell my grandfather."
Audrina paused, but she didn't turn around.
Taking a deep breath, she walked out the front door.
...
The night was freezing, the air biting against her skin. The residential neighborhood was dead quiet, with warm yellow light spilling from the windows of the luxurious homes.
None of that light fell on her.
Once she reached the main road, she pulled out her phone.
The screen was spiderwebbed with cracks, completely dead.
She shoved it back into her purse.
Forget it. In all of Kingshire, she had no home anyway. Even if she could hail a cab, she wouldn't know where to tell the driver to go.
