Audrina had only managed a few hours of sleep after getting home last night. She had received a call from the hospital early that morning—the results of her and Zachary's pre-marital health checkup were ready.
First thing in the morning, she headed straight to the hospital, feeling utterly disgusted with the whole situation.
If Zachary wanted a kid so badly, he should just have Vera give him one. There was zero reason to waste his time and energy on her.
But she suddenly remembered how bizarrely Zachary had been acting before the holidays, and Willow's warnings echoed in her mind...
Well then. Since Vera was bold enough to try and play games with her, she shouldn't blame Audrina for being merciless.
...
Audrina went straight from the hospital to the station. As soon as she got to work, she noticed a major announcement posted on the internal board:
*Following a management review, Roland Ladd is suspended from all duties, effective immediately, pending an internal investigation.*
Everyone at the station was whispering and gossiping. No one had a clue what Roland had done to deserve it.
He had been perfectly fine before the holidays. How could he get suspended on his very first day back?
But Audrina knew exactly why.
She sent Sebastian a quick text: [You move fast. I saw what happened with Roland.]
He replied instantly: [How are you planning to thank me?]
[Aren't I buying you dinner tonight?]
[Two completely separate things. Don't mix them up.]
Audrina smiled slightly, slipped her phone back into her pocket, and decided to ignore him.
By the time her shift ended, Willow was caught in traffic and told Audrina to go ahead to the restaurant without her.
Inside the private dining room, Sebastian was the only one there. He had already let Audrina know ahead of time that he had invited Carter.
Audrina glanced around the room before taking the seat right next to him as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "Willow's stuck in traffic. Is Mr. Garrison not here yet?"
"No." Sebastian asked, "Why wouldn't you let me pick you up?"
He had offered to pick her up from work, but she had dismissed the idea with a few brief texts. He was clearly displeased about it.
Audrina poured herself a glass of water and took a sip. "Zachary has been acting a little strangely lately. I can't afford to give him any ammunition to use against me."
As she finished speaking, the private room fell dead silent.
She cast a sideways glance and saw Sebastian leaning back in his chair, his lips pressed in a tight, profoundly unhappy line.
He was trying so hard to act tough.
