Roland looked at her coldly. "I let you go on air on your very first day because you showed spark and drive during your interview. If you can't handle it, there's a long line of people waiting to take your spot."
"I know. It won't happen again."
He stared at her for a moment, his gaze slowly dragging down her face. She really was gorgeous.
He pulled his eyes away, leaning back in his chair, his tone softening slightly. "I'm giving you a hard time today because you've actually got some good luck. Right after the holidays, we have an off-site interview lined up. The Chairman of Prestige Group specifically requested you to conduct the interview."
He pulled a pack of cigarettes from his drawer, took one out, and lit it.
Audrina had no idea why Roland was suddenly doing her a favor, but she had been sick of him for a long time.
That sleazy, lingering gaze of his always made her skin crawl.
"Mr. Ladd," she began, carefully weighing her words. "Since you're looking to transition me into conducting interviews, if I successfully handle this assignment for Prestige Group, could I be transferred to the Corner Office segment?"
Once she was over there, she would no longer be under his management.
Roland exhaled a cloud of smoke, his tone unreadable. "You definitely have the talent for talk shows. A transfer isn't impossible. But after the holidays, I need you to accompany me to entertain Mr. Larson. If we secure his advertising investment, I'll agree to your request."
Audrina hesitated for a few seconds. "Deal."
"Great. You can head out now."
The second the door clicked shut, Roland took a deep, aggressive drag of his cigarette.
"Mr. Larson sure has good taste," he muttered to himself in the empty room.
He had originally planned to find a way to make Audrina "his."
But a few days ago, people from Prestige Group had suddenly reached out to him.
They offered to sign long-term advertising contracts across several of the station's programs. Their only condition was that Audrina had to meet with Mr. Larson and "keep him company."
Roland was a pervert, but he loved money even more.
If this massive deal went through, his bonuses at the station would double, not to mention the kickbacks he could pocket on the side.
As for Audrina's request, he'd just string her along for now.
...
Zachary pressed the gas pedal and asked casually, "How late did you end up working last night?"
Audrina leaned back against the headrest, her gaze drifting out the window. "Pretty late. I didn't check the time."
"Must have been exhausting," he said.
But he had already checked. Nobody at the station had worked late the night before.
Which meant she was lying to his face.
Gripping the steering wheel, Zachary shot her a sideways glance. She genuinely looked like someone who had been worn out by overtime.
Without any concrete proof, he held back from exposing her lie right then and there.
He still needed her to maintain his position as the heir; she was the perfect fiancée in his grandfather's eyes.
So, where was she last night? Who was she with? What was she doing? And what was her endgame?
He would take his time and find out.
