Collin leaned in, lowering his voice with a sly grin, and suggested, “Why not strike while the iron’s hot? If Mr. Rundell’s got a thing for you, maybe you should take things to the next level with him.”

Natasha wasn’t clueless about what Collin meant. Because she knew all too well what Collin was implying, she had been quick to shut down any talk about her and Jared previously.

But she knew Collin all too well. Once he set his mind on something, he wouldn’t stop until he achieved what he wanted. If she shot him down right away, it would only make him more determined to push her.

He would then team up with the rest of the Whittier family and pressure her even more. She might as well use his stubbornness to her advantage.

“That’s actually a pretty good suggestion,” Natasha said suddenly.

Collin’s face lit up with excitement. “Does that mean you finally get it? You’ve agreed to it?”

Natasha shot him a look. “Hold on, I’m not done yet.”

Collin urged her, “Just say it if you have anything.”

Natasha replied calmly, “If you want me to get closer to Jared, you’ll have to do me a favor first, right?”

Collin asked quickly, “What is it?”

Natasha leaned in and whispered in his ear. Collin’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Seriously? You want me to help you with that?”

Natasha arched her brow. “I just want a little extra security for myself in the Whittier family. After everything that happened, which you saw too. Those people could come for me any time.”

Collin paused, then gritted his teeth. “Alright, I’ll do what I can.”

After eating, Natasha just lay there with her eyes closed for a bit. Perhaps she had slept too much earlier, and now she found herself wide awake.

The door swung open. Natasha heard steady footsteps approaching and could already guess who it was. Sure enough, Jared was soon at her bedside. She caught the familiar scent of him, which gave her an inexplicable sense of security.

“How are you feeling? Does your head still hurt?” Jared asked gently, his voice full of concern. He reached out, his slender hand gently closing around hers.

Natasha shook her head and said, “It doesn’t hurt anymore.”

Under the room lights, her face looked ghostly pale, almost ethereal. Her long, dark hair spilled out in messy waves across the white pillow, and the contrast made her seem even more fragile and helpless.

Seeing her so pale and vulnerable, Jared’s heart raced uncontrollably. Instinctively, an overwhelming urge to protect her washed over him. Without hesitation, he leaned in and pressed his lips to hers.

Natasha was stunned by his sudden kiss. Her eyes flew open in disbelief. ‘Seriously? We’re in a hospital!’ she thought, her heart racing. ‘Is he really kissing me right here, like he doesn’t care at all?’ Natasha’s mind spun.

What if someone walks in and catches us?’ she freaked, her face heating up. ‘After all, on the surface, we’re just boss and subordinate. Our friends-with-benefits hookup isn’t something to be made public.

Natasha struggled, refusing to cooperate. Jared had no choice but to pull back from her lips. “What’s wrong?” Jared fixed his gaze on her, searching her face.

Natasha’s cheeks blushed. “Do you really have to kiss me in a hospital room?” she asked.

Jared’s lips curled into a teasing smile. “You’re feeling shy now?”

Natasha shot him a mock glare. “Seriously, could you at least pay attention to where we are?” she protested.

Jared quirked an eyebrow. “It’s your room, and no one’s going to walk in during this period.”

Natasha’s eyes widened. “But that doesn’t mean you can just…”

Before she could finish, Jared’s strikingly handsome face was suddenly inches from hers. His intense, masculine scent drifted around her nose, making her heart race.
