Chapter 400

Gloria, overwhelmed with grief, couldn’t remain standing but sat in a chair. Clayton managed to keep it together, but he had to grip the chair to steady himself.
Jared came up to them and said softly, “My condolences.” He then shook Clayton’s hand. Gloria whimpered and started crying softly again. Jared offered a few words of comfort and went down the line, shaking hands with each member of the Grosso family.
Natasha stood at the end of the Grosso family row, dressed in a black dress. Her hair was styled in an elegant updo, and she was exceptionally quiet.
Jared walked up to her and reached out. Natasha was caught off guard when she saw him. ‘He actually showed up, too?’ she thought, surprised.
Jared was dressed in a black limited-edition suit today. His features were strikingly refined, his build tall and imposing. He carried an air of cool detachment and aristocratic elegance.
When Natasha met his gaze, her heart couldn’t help but race with nervousness. She was afraid someone would discover the forbidden connection between her and Jared.
She bit her lip, then tentatively placed her hand in his palm. She just wanted to give him a quick handshake and be done with it. But to her surprise, Jared clasped her hand firmly and refused to let go.
Natasha was shocked. Her eyes flew open in disbelief. ‘Has he lost his mind?’ Natasha thought. ‘He’s actually holding my hand right here at the Grosso family’s funeral? Isn’t he afraid someone will find out about us?’ Her nerves were on edge.
She was standing in the least noticeable spot among the Grosso family members. Everyone’s attention was focused on Brent’s funeral at the moment, and no one was paying them attention.
‘But what if someone actually sees us? What if, against all odds, someone catches us? Our reputations would be toast,’ she thought. ‘People would say I’m shameless, flirting with another guy at someone’s funeral.
Natasha’s heart was pounding like crazy. Every nerve in her body tensed. “Let go!” she hissed urgently at him in a low voice. But Jared ignored her completely. Instead, he tightened his grip. His gaze grew even deeper as he looked at her.
Natasha couldn’t figure out what his gaze meant. All she knew was that if he kept holding her hand like this, a disaster would happen. Just as she feared, trouble came knocking. She suddenly heard Percy’s voice right behind her.
“Mr. Rundell,” Percy called out, his voice cutting through the air.
Percy, now the heir to the Grosso family, was in charge of everything. He was the main person in charge of Brent’s funeral. He had been tied up greeting guests just now, and only now did he notice what was happening over here.
Natasha tensed up the instant she heard Percy’s voice. Her heart nearly jumped out of her throat. She hurriedly pulled her hand out of Jared’s grasp, panic flooding her.
The next second, Percy was already standing right in front of them. He reached out and shook Jared’s hand. “Thank you for making time to attend,” Percy said.
Jared’s good-looking face remained calm. “It’s only right. Brent and I are acquaintances, after all,” he said.
The two chatted briefly, and Percy personally walked Jared to the door, sending him away. Before leaving, Jared couldn’t help but cast one last look at Natasha.
Her profile was cool and distant, her expression remarkably calm. She seemed completely detached from the mourning and condolences happening just a few steps away. None of this really concerned her.
