After she had washed up, Natasha went downstairs. To her surprise, Jared was still home. He had his back facing her, talking on the phone. He must have sensed her coming down the stairs.

He turned to look at her, just as Natasha was looking at him. Their gazes locked. The air crackled with tension, sparks practically flying between them. Both felt a shock, like electricity shooting straight through their bodies.

Natasha was the first to break eye contact. Jared hung up at the same moment. “You’re up? Breakfast is ready,” Jared said his eyes soft as he led her to the dining room.

Natasha sat down at the dining table. She glanced at the feast laid out before her, hesitating. “You’re not going to work today?” she asked.

Jared gently handed her a sandwich, his gesture full of care. “Have breakfast first. After that, there’s something I want to tak to you about,” he said, sounding a little mysterious.

Natasha blinked, puzzled. ‘What are you up to?’ she wondered. ‘You’re acting so mysterious.’ But after sleeping in so late, she was honestly pretty hungry. Natasha kept quiet and just dug into her breakfast.

When she was done, she looked up and said, “Alright, what do you want to talk about?”

Jared’s expression turned serious. “I’ve already had someone investigate the real reason your friend, Dorothy, has failed to land any collaboration lately.”

Natasha was stunned, then pressed, “So what’s the reason?” She’d always felt there was more to it than met the eye. She just hadn’t had the chance to look into it herself, but Jared had already investigated for her.

Jared locked eyes with her, his gaze intense. “It was the Whittier family. They had sent people to mess things up for her.”

Natasha’s eyes widened in shock. “What did you just say?”

Jared locked his gaze on her. “If I’m not mistaken, this was your father’s idea.”

Natasha’s heart skipped a beat, thinking, ‘Dad actually targeted my friend Dorothy? Why else would he do that? It was obviously just a way to make me give in, to pressure me into agreeing to help out Jared’s uncle, Harley.

Natasha had already refused her father directly before. Even when her mother, Sandra, came to see her in person, she still wouldn’t give in. She never expected her father to keep pushing like this. Instead, her dad went after her good friend Dorothy.

“This is way out of line, Natasha thought, her anger rising. She clenched her fists; her face looked grim.

Jared fixed his gaze on her. “Looks like you’ve already figured it out?” Natasha had certainly figured it out right away, but it wasn’t something she could blurt out to him.

She couldn’t tell him that her dad was using her best friend to force her into spying on Jared for Harley. If Jared ever found out she was being used as a pawn to watch him, he would never trust her so easily again.

He would definitely cut off their friends-with-benefits relationship, and she could even lose her job if things went south. The more things go this way, the tighter the Whittier family’s grip on me would be, she thought to herself.

“I’m making a trip back to the Whittier family,” Natasha said, pressing her lips together, determination flashing in her eyes.

Jared stood up from his chair and said, “Let me send you.”

“That’s not necessary,” Natasha said, cutting him off. She refused him without a moment’s hesitation. If her dad found out Jared was the one who sent her back, he would come down even harder on her.

“This is my family matter. It’s better if outsiders stay out of it,” she explained. With that, she turned and headed for the villa’s front door.

Jared’s brows furrowed when he heard her call him an “outsider.” Her words struck him hard; a wry, self-mocking smile curled at his lips.

‘So after sleeping with her so many times, I’m still just an outsider in her eyes?’ Jared thought, a wave of bitterness washing over him.
