Natasha took a few quick steps toward Jared.

“Why won’t you let me get a new job?” she demanded.

Jared’s face darkened. “When did I ever stop you from getting a new job?”

Natasha glared at him angrily. “Wasn’t it you who pressured all those companies I applied to so they wouldn’t hire me?!

Jared shot back, “No.”

Natasha narrowed her eyes in disbelief, “You really didn’t?”

Jared pressed his thin lips together, cold and silent.

He gave her arm a sudden tug.

Natasha lost her balance and toppled toward him.

She landed squarely in Jared’s arms.

Her palm accidentally pressed against his chest muscles.

Natasha instinctively gave them a little squeeze.

‘Not bad at all, she thought.

It was firm, powerful, and surprisingly springy.

She heard Jared let out a low grunt.

Natasha froze instantly.

She was about to go crazy.

Jared was standing so close to her.

His hot breath washed over her.

A strange rush of electricity shot through her body, all the way up to her scalp.

Natasha quickly yanked her hands away.

“Sorry. It was an accident…” she stammered.

She blurted out, cheeks flaming.

Jared shot her a look, his eyes full of implication. “You sure it wasn’t on purpose?”

Natasha nodded quickly. “No, really.”

Jared leaned in, his voice low and teasing. “Or is it that you haven’t had a man around lately, so you’re trying to cop a feel off me?”

Natasha’s lips twitched in disbelief.

‘He’s seriously accusing me of trying to grope him?’ Natasha thought, exasperated.

‘As if!’ she fumed inwardly.

Natasha scrambled to get up, desperate to escape his arms.

But she’d totally forgotten she was wearing high heels today.

As she tried to stand up, her foot twisted awkwardly.

Before she could even get her balance, the pain in her ankle made her stumble and fall right back into his arms.

“Well…” Natasha couldn’t help but let out a sound.

She cursed inwardly, ‘Damn it.

‘Why is it that the harder I try to get away from him, the more tangled up I get with him?’

She instinctively tried to get up again.

But suddenly, she felt a strong grip around her waist.

Jared’s hand pressed firmly against her waist, keeping her from moving.

Natasha found herself stuck on his lap, completely unable to move.

“Let me go!”

She protested again, cheeks red with shame and frustration.

Jared’s voice suddenly came from above her head. “If you’re looking for a job, why not come to me?”

Natasha blinked with a puzzled look. “I’m job hunting. Why would I come to you?”

She’d finally managed to quit her old job to keep her distance from him.

If she went to him for help now, he’d find her another job, making it even easier for him to keep an eye on her whenever he wanted, or to look for a chance to rekindle things between them.

Then all her efforts would be for nothing.

Jared reached out, gently lifted a strand of her hair, and brought it to his nose, taking a slow, deliberate sniff

“You know, if you ask me, you can work anywhere you want,” he said, his voice low and teasing.

He definitely had the power to make it happen for her.

Natasha would rather do anything than ask him for help.

“No thanks,” she replied, her tone icy.

Jared narrowed his eyes at her. “Are you sure? Didn’t you say nobody would hire you?”

Natasha spun around and shot him a glare. “Isn’t that your fault?”

The moment she brought it up, her chest was heaving with rage.

Jared fixed her with an intense stare. “What if I told you this has nothing to do with me?”

Natasha blurted out, “Nothing to do with you? Seriously?”

‘Who else could have that much power, calling all the shots?’ she wondered.

Jared reached out and tilted her chin up. “If I help you figure out who’s behind this, what’s in it for me?”

Natasha turned away. “Nothing.”

She knew exactly what he was after.

But she couldn’t give it to him, and she didn’t want to.

Jared coaxed her, “Think it over before you answer.”

Natasha kept her face cold. “I’ve thought it over a million times. There’s nothing in it for you.”

Help or not, whatever. It made no difference to her.

Jared released her.

Natasha scrambled to her feet, ignoring the pain in her sprained ankle, and hurried toward the door.

It was like she couldn’t wait to get out of there and away from him.

Suddenly, Jared’s voice rang out behind her. “Find out why Natasha’s job applications keep getting rejected.”

Natasha stopped in her tracks and whipped around to look.

She caught Jared on the phone, issuing instructions.

A few minutes later, he got a call back with an answer.

Jared’s expression darkened as he listened to the report.

After he hung up, his expression grew heavy.

“What happened?” Natasha asked, curious.

Jared’s face was tense. “Harley’s awake.”

Natasha froze. “What?”

Jared’s eyes were shadowed. “He was in a coma for more than ten days. The doctors said he’d never wake up, but he did, and he’s actually been awake for several days now.”

Natasha fell silent.

She thought, ‘Harley waking up is a shocker, but seriously, what does that have to do with all my job applications getting rejected?’

Jared seemed to know exactly what she was thinking.

His deep eyes locked onto hers. “Because the one who ordered those companies not to hire you was Harley.”

Natasha’s heart skipped a beat.

“Because it was Harley who recommended Nelson to your parents,” Jared said, his voice dropping to a low, serious tore.

Natasha’s eyes widened in shock….

“Nelson?” she echoed, her voice full of disbelief.

It was the same person Bernard, Roxanne, and Sandra had tried to force her to marry the last time she was at Whittier

Manor.

It turned out that Harley had sent him.

Bernard had always been loyal to Harley.

There was no way he’d ever say no to him.

Jared narrowed his eyes. “If I’m guessing right, Harley’s already dug up everything about our past.”

Natasha sucked in a sharp breath.

“So what?” she shot back.

Jared gave her a meaningful look. “Harley wants to use you to threaten me. Either I give him back control of the Rundell Group, or he’ll force you to marry Nelson.”

Natasha clenched her fists.

Her palms were slick with cold sweat.

She never imagined things could get this messy.

Without even realizing it, she’d been caught up in another round of drama, a pawn in someone else’s game.

This time, Harley was using her as leverage against Jared.

She’d been desperately fighting against being used as a pawn in someone else’s game.

She never thought it would actually come to this.

Natasha closed her eyes. “What are you going to do?”

‘Is he really going to give up the Rundell Group he fought so hard to reclaim, because of me?’ she wondered.

Jared fixed his gaze on her. “If I hand the Rundell Group back to Harley, would you get back together with me?”

Natasha’s eyes wavered.

Her first instinct was to say no.

She had finally managed to break things off with him and put some distance between them.

‘How did I end up tangled up with him again?’ she thought, frustrated.

If she agreed to him now, she’d get herself even more entangled with him, and there’d be no way out.
