Natasha’s eyes trembled slightly.

She turned her face away and took a deep breath.

She said, “We were never even together, so what’s this about me dumping you?”

In her mind, “dumping” was a word to describe when actual couples broke up.

She and Jared were friends with benefits.

She felt that for friends with benefits, it would be considered dumping.

A dark glint flashed in Jared’s eyes. “If it’s not dumping, then what is it?”

Natasha met his gaze. “We agreed from the start, either of us could end this whenever we wanted.”

Jared’s brows knitted together. “If you’re ending this, you at least owe me a reason, don’t you?”

Natasha bit her lip, struggling to keep her emotions in check.

“There’s no reason. I don’t want to keep this friends with benefits thing going with you anymore, alright?”

If they kept this up, Roxanne would eventually find out.

She wasn’t afraid of being accused of hooking up with another guy.

But if the rest of the Whittier family found out about their relationship, they’d definitely make a big deal out of it.

By then, they might even turn into enemies.

Natasha really didn’t want to help Bernard and Jared’s uncle gang up on him.

To her surprise, Jared agreed right away.

Natasha was stunned. “You agreed?”

She thought he wouldn’t agree so easily.

‘Is he interested in that girl from the blind date earlier?’ she wondered.

Suddenly, Jared pulled her into his arms.

He drew her close.

His forehead pressed against hers, his warm breath washing over her.

He said, “I stopped wanting to be friends with benefits ages ago.

“From now on, we’re official. I don’t care if you break up with that guy or not, it doesn’t change anything.”

He’d already made up his mind.

Her relationship with Percy was finished anyway.

He would not get hung up on a piece of paper.

As long as she was willing to be with him, nothing else mattered.

Natasha felt like he was talking nonsense now.

She thought, ‘What does he mean, it doesn’t matter whether I break up with Percy or not?

‘If I started something with Jared before ending things with Percy, wouldn’t that make me the worst kind of person?

‘Never mind the morals, I might even be crossing into illegal territory.”

Natasha struggled out of his embrace, her movements urgent.

“You completely missed my point.” she snapped.

She looked up at him. “I’m saying we’re done for good, no more friends with benefits, no more anything. There won’t be any kind of relationship between us, ever.

“And there’s absolutely no chance I’ll ever be your girlfriend.”

The tension in the car shot up instantly.

It felt like the air could freeze solid any second.

The driver could sense the icy atmosphere.

He quietly slipped out, leaving them some privacy.

He left the two of them alone in the back seat.

Jared’s eyes widened in shock.

He cupped the back of her head, pulling her closer. “Are you serious right now? What did I do to piss you off? You really want to end things with me?”

Natasha forced herself to breathe, enunciating every word. “You didn’t do anything wrong, and I’m not joking.

“I honestly don’t want to keep this thing going between us anymore, alright?”

Jared’s eyes narrowed, he couldn’t accept it, not even for a second.

He’d been longing to take things to the next level with her.

He never thought she’d break things off so coldly.

In that instant, something suddenly dawned on him.

He rushed to promise her, “Is it because I gave you that one-month deadline and pushed you too hard?

“I told you, none of that matters anymore. As long as you’re willing to be with me…”

Before he could finish, Natasha gave him a hard slap right across the face.

“Wasn’t I clear enough? I don’t need your promises, I want you to keep your distance from me,” she snapped.

With that, she shoved him away and stormed out of the car.

Jared sat in the car, stunned.

It felt like he’d been locked inside a walk-in freezer.

He’d known exactly what she meant from the start.

He’d played dumb, hoping to stall her, maybe get her to rethink things.

But in the end, he was only fooling himself.

The next day, Natasha had to pull herself together and head to work.

After the way she shut Jared down last night, she doubted she could stick around at the company much longer.

She was already ready to walk away for good.

But to her surprise, it was Jared who didn’t show up at work that day.

Natasha figured it wasn’t really her place to ask where he was, or if his sudden absence had anything to do with her.

After all, they’d already broken up. There was nothing between them anymore.

If it had nothing to do with her, she’d be overthinking things.

After work, Natasha made plans to have dinner with her best friend Dorothy.

Natasha seemed distracted several times during dinner, her mind clearly elsewhere.

“What’s going on with you? You’ve been off ever since last night,” Dorothy asked, giving her a suspicious look.

Natasha didn’t want to talk about it. “It’s nothing.”

Dorothy gave her a suspicious look. “You really think you can fool me? Spill it, what’s really going on between you and Mr.

Rundell?”

Natasha blinked in surprise. “You already know?”

Dorothy rolled her eyes. “Come on, I’m not stupid. Someone like Mr. Rundell wouldn’t let us hitch a ride for no reason.

“And last night, the way he was looking at you, his eyes were practically burning holes through you.

“You and Mr. Rundell are seeing each other? Wow, Natasha, you ditched Percy and ended up hooking Jared himself.”

She could barely contain her excitement.

Jared was way out of Percy’s league.

She felt that Natasha was finally ready to let go of the past and start fresh.

Natasha explained quietly, “Jared and I had a thing as friends with benefits for a while, but that’s over now.”

Dorothy gaped. “Hold on, what did you say?”

She’d learned her best friend was getting together with Jared, and barely had time to celebrate before Natasha hit her with this bombshell.

Natasha repeated, “I told you, Jared and I are completely done.”

Dorothy shook her head, refusing to accept it. “How can you two end things so suddenly?”

Natasha’s eyes were cold and clear. “We come from totally different worlds. Even if we didn’t break up now, it was only a matter of time.”

“I don’t buy it.” Dorothy shook her head, disagreeing.

“Mr. Rundell isn’t like Percy, he’s not hung up on status. If he really wants you, he wouldn’t care about your background or where you come from.”

Natasha took a deep breath, her voice tinged with resignation. “Maybe so, but we’re finished.”

Dorothy groaned, totally bummed. “Seriously? I was out here shipping you two, and the romance was already dead.

“If I’d known, I wouldn’t have bothered getting my hopes up.”

After dinner, Natasha headed back to her place at Oceanview International.

As soon as she stepped inside, she sensed something was off in the air.

Before she could even turn on the lights, a shadowy figure was already moving toward her.

Caught completely off guard, she was pinned against the door.

Then, his lips descended on her, overwhelming and relentless.
