"Holy crap, it's real," Maggie said, reading from her phone. "GHB analogues, hallucinogens, hypnosis, mind control... there's even talk of using implanted chips or external devices to interfere with brainwaves and directly manipulate motor nerves or thoughts. Any of these could be used to control someone's actions. It means Damaris could have been deliberately manipulated."

A collective gasp filled the room. The idea that these obscure concepts were now a part of their reality was deeply unsettling.

"My God, can you really buy this stuff? No wonder they use it in TV shows. I guess it's not just made up," Melody said, clutching a pillow tighter. She recalled a thriller she had acted in where the villain used a similar colorless liquid to knock out the female lead. The thought that a far-fetched plotline she had once performed was now playing out in her own life was chilling.

Wendy leaned over to look at the phone. "But these are either controlled substances or experimental concepts. Who would have the means to get their hands on any of this?"

"Ladies, calm down for a second," Kenneth interjected. "The real question is, if she was being controlled, who was doing it? Farmer? Or Yvonne, who had a grudge against her? But Yvonne was seriously injured and in the hospital at the time. I doubt she had the energy to go after Damaris. Why don't you all give me your analysis? Who do you think the killer is?"

Leaning back lazily, Kenneth picked up his teacup and gently blew on the floating leaves, looking for all the world like a seasoned veteran. He had suspected foul play in Damaris's death from the start, so he wasn't surprised that they had concluded it was murder. He had investigated Damaris's social circle; despite her tough exterior, she was known for being generous and didn't have any enemies, except for Yvonne.

Given Yvonne's vengeful nature, it was unlikely she would have let Damaris off the hook. But she was in the hospital, and with all the attention on her, she wouldn't have been foolish enough to do something so self-incriminating. He suspected Farmer was the killer, but he was certain he hadn't acted alone.
