Upon receiving the tip, the police immediately descended on North Town to apprehend Madden. But when they stormed his rental unit, they found it empty. There wasn't even any luggage. It meant Madden had likely moved again. His counter-surveillance skills were formidable.

"Search the area! Seal it off! He can't have gotten far," Officer Lamont commanded. His detectives immediately began a door-to-door canvass of the neighborhood.

Based on the intelligence they had, the police believed Madden might be involved in other ongoing criminal activities, which was why they had moved to arrest him directly.

Across the street from the unfolding police operation, a man wearing a food delivery uniform and a helmet sat on an electric scooter. He glanced at the swarm of detectives, a scornful smirk tugging at his lips.

He started the scooter and drove down the street. As he passed one of the parked police cars, the man in the helmet turned his head slightly. For a fleeting instant, his gaze locked with Lamont's.

Just as quickly, the man looked away.

But Lamont felt a jolt. Something was wrong. He recognized the scent of his own kind.

The man's composure was unnatural. The dismissive glint in his eye sent a shiver of alarm through him. A normal person would be curious, or at least intimidated by the police presence, and would give them a wide berth. But this delivery driver had cruised right past a police car without a flicker of fear or interest. His calmness and indifference were not normal.

Although the man's face looked nothing like Madden's, his sharp, calculating eyes held a clear note of provocation.

"Something's not right!" Lamont spun around, his eyes fixed on the direction the scooter had taken. It had just turned into an alley.

"You three, with me! We're going after that delivery scooter. The rest of you, continue the canvass!" Lamont was already yanking his car door open and jumping inside.

"Officer Lamont, did you see something?" one of the detectives asked as he got in.

"That delivery driver is highly suspicious. Contact dispatch and get them to lock onto his location, now!"
