Janina's tone was frigid. As she spoke, she began to crack her knuckles. If Julius dared to utter one more word, she would absolutely punch him in the face. She'd tried being reasonable, but he wasn't listening. He must think she was a dumpster, willing to take in any piece of trash. It was time to teach him a lesson and show him his place.

"Janina—"

Julius opened his mouth to say something more.

But he only managed to get out a single word before a searing pain exploded across his face.

Janina unleashed a series of hard slaps, so forceful they left him seeing stars.

Julius was stunned, his hands flying to his stinging cheeks in disbelief. But the real pain wasn't on his face. As a man, he could handle physical pain. Compared to the chronic ache in his gut and the tightness in his chest, Janina's slaps were nothing. And yet, he felt as if those slaps had struck him directly in the heart, stealing his breath.

In Janina's dismissive gaze, he finally understood: she would never, ever forgive him.

Seeing Julius on the verge of losing control, Queenie feared he might lash out at Janina. She quickly stepped between them, her eyes cold as she faced him.

"Get lost," she spat, her voice like ice.

Julius's throat tightened. His gaze moved past Queenie to Janina. Their eyes met.

He saw no emotion in her expression, not even the disgust or hatred she'd shown before. It was a complete, utter indifference, and that apathy wounded him more deeply than any anger could have.

Julius took a step back, his head hung low. "I'm sorry," he mumbled, before turning and fleeing as if escaping a nightmare.

After he was gone, Queenie looked at Janina, who seemed lost in thought. Assuming she was upset by the encounter, Queenie asked, "Janina, do you still want to go out?"
