A Woman Worth Billions Dated the Wrong Brother novel Chapter 369

Not brothers

Amber POV

The problem with secrets was that once one cracked open, ten more seemed to crawl out behind it. I had spent most of the morning reviewing everything we had collected on the White family, and this time I wasn’t looking at White Corporation. I was looking at the family itself: birth records, marriage certificates, old trusts, property transfers, corporate partnerships, photographs, archived legal documents, and everything the Ember Association and Jason’s contacts had managed to uncover.

Eventually, I found something that made me stop scrolling.

“Jason, come here.”

He was sitting across the room with his own laptop, supposedly working, although I knew perfectly well that half his attention was on me. Ever since the doctor put me on bed rest, Jason had developed an irritating sixth sense for whenever I was about to discover something stressful.

“What did you find?”

“The Whites and the Vincents are connected.”

That got him moving. He crossed the room and sat beside me, taking the laptop when I turned it toward him. I showed him the records I’d been following. The connection wasn’t through his stepmother like we’d originally assumed. It went back much further than that. There were old investments, trusts connected through intermediaries, property transactions, and companies that had changed names or ownership but repeatedly circled back to the same families.

None of those records alone would have convinced me of anything. Together, they formed a pattern that was impossible to ignore.

“The White family knew the Vincents long before your stepmother was involved with them,” I explained.

Jason’s expression hardened. “So my father lied.”

“At the very least, he didn’t tell us everything.”

That was becoming Mr. White’s specialty.

The last time we’d confronted him, he’d admitted that the Vincents had offered him money for Jason. He’d claimed it wasn’t truly an offer, that he’d been pressured and threatened until surrendering Jason seemed like his only choice. We’d later discovered that Jason’s stepmother, whom everyone believed had died, had actually been forced to become another family’s heir’s wife. She had managed to make the call that eventually helped save Jason, and she’d lost her life because of it.

We’d believed we’d finally understood what had happened.

Now I wasn’t sure we’d understood anything.

Mr. White had disappeared with Oscar the moment we started looking deeper into the past. They hadn’t been abducted. Jason had found the footage himself: both men covered from head to toe, suitcases in hand, slipping through an emergency exit at White Manor. Oscar had since been caught on camera entering Nevermore.

They were running from something.

Or toward someone.

I stared at the records again, but something else was bothering me. Oscar had gone with Mr. White willingly If

his was only about what happened to Jason as a child, why would Oscar need to disappear too?

Then the answer-or at least another question-occurred to me.

“Jason, there’s something we’ve never checked.”

He looked at me. “What?”

“Blood.”

His expression changed.

Getting Jason’s DNA was obviously simple. Getting Oscar’s should have been much more difficult, considering he was currently hiding somewhere in Nevermore. Fortunately, Oscar had been involved in enough legal trouble over the last several months that a DNA profile existed in the police database. Through the proper investigation, there was already a preserved profile that could be compared.

Jason provided his sample.

Then we waited.

I hated waiting under normal circumstances. Waiting while trapped in bed was worse. Jason refused to let me constantly check for updates because, according to him, refreshing a screen every thirty seconds counted as unnecessary stress. 1

When the results finally arrived, Jason opened them before I could.

He went completely still.

That scared me more than any visible reaction would have.

“What?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

“Jason?”

He turned the screen toward me.

I read the report once.

Then again.

Then a third time, because my brain refused to accept something written so clearly.

Jason and Oscar shared no biological relationship.

None.

Not half-brothers. Not some unexpected distant relationship that could explain away the discrepancy. The genetic comparison didn’t support them sharing blood at all.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered.

“Apparently not.”

I looked at Jason, then back at the results. For practically their entire lives, Jason and Oscar had been considered half-brothers. Jason was the son of Mr. White and the Sun family’s daughter. Oscar was supposedly the son of Mr.

White and Jason’s second wife. Same father, different mothers.

Except that couldn’t be true.

“Either you’re not Mr. White’s biological son,” I said slowly, “or Oscar isn’t.”

Jason’s jaw tightened. “And White conveniently disappeared before we could test him.”

That was the problem. Without Mr. White’s DNA, we couldn’t immediately determine which son wasn’t his.

Or whether there was something even stranger happening.

Who is

Amber POV

We waited until evening to tell Mr. and Mrs. Sun.

We simply asked them to meet us in the living room.

Jason was firmly enforcing my bed-rest restrictions, so walking downstairs apparently required the level of supervision normally reserved for transporting a head of state.

“I can walk.”

“I know.”

“Then stop holding my arm.”

“No.”

“I’m pregnant, not ninety.”

“Your blood pressure was high.”

“You’re raising it.”

That made Mrs. Sun look up from the sofa as we entered.

“He’s right.”

I stared at her.

“You don’t even know what we’re arguing about.”

“I heard enough.”

Mr. Sun laughed from his chair.

Traitors.

All of them.

Jason helped me settle onto the sofa, arranged a cushion behind me, and only then sat beside me.

Mrs. Sun looked between us.

“What happened?”

“The babies are fine,” I said immediately.

Her shoulders visibly relaxed.

“Then what is it?”

Jason handed her the DNA report.

Mrs. Sun read it.

Her expression slowly changed.

Mr. Sun noticed and leaned closer.

“What?” 1

handed him the report without saying anything.

He read it.

Then read it again.

Mrs. Sun looked at Jason.

“This can’t be right.”

“We repeated the comparison.”

“But Oscar is your brother.”

“No,” Jason said quietly. “Apparently he isn’t.”

“Half-brother.”

“Not biologically.”

Mrs. Sun shook her head.

“You have the same father.”

Jason’s expression remained remarkably calm.

“Then one of us isn’t White’s son.”

Silence settled over the living room.

Mr. Sun stared at the report.

“Which one?”

“We don’t know,” I answered.

Mrs. Sun sat back against the sofa.

“Your mother told us White was your father.”

Jason looked at her.

“Did she ever mention anyone else?”

“No.”

“Grandma, think.”

“I don’t need to think. Your mother told us White was your father.”

Jason’s expression softened immediately.

“I’m not accusing Mom of lying.”

“Then what are you saying?”

“I’m saying someone lied.”

Nobody spoke.

Because there was no arguing with that.

Jason’s mother might genuinely have believed Mr. White was his biological father.

Oscar might be the one who wasn’t Mr. White’s son.

Or Mr. White might have known all along that Jason wasn’t biologically his.

Without Mr. White’s DNA, we couldn’t determine which possibility was true.

Conveniently, he had run away before we could ask.

“Before your daughter married Mr. White,” I asked carefully, “was there anyone else? Someone she dated?”

Mrs. Sun shook her head.

“Not that we knew.” 1

“Someone she was particularly close to?”

“I don’t know, Amber. She was an adult. We were close, but we didn’t know every person she spoke to.”

Mr. Sun looked thoughtful.

“She never gave us any reason to believe White wasn’t Jason’s father.”

Jason stared at the report.

Then I remembered the other part.

“There’s more.”

Mrs. Sun closed her eyes.

“Of course there is.”

Under different circumstances, I might have laughed.

“The White family’s connection to the Vincents predates Jason’s stepmother.”

That immediately changed the atmosphere.

Mr. Sun sat straighter.

“How far back?”

“We’re still tracing it, but enough that I don’t believe Mr. White gave us the complete story. He made it sound as though the Vincents approached him for Jason, offered money, then pressured him when he resisted. But the Whites already had connections to them.”

Jason’s jaw tightened.

His childhood was suddenly back at the center of everything.

Someone had taken him after Mr. White gave him up.

Someone else had eventually rescued him.

We had photographic proof that Jason and I had both been brought to the castle as children. There was a picture of

s sitting beneath a tree, eating fruit together.

Then Jason disappeared again.

Two years after he’d originally been sent away, Mr. and Mrs. Sun found him in a house in the mountains.

By then, he’d been mistreated so badly that he’d lost his identity.
