Discrepancies

Amber POV

Three days into the warehouse surveillance, Jasmine called me.

I answered immediately.

“Please tell me you found something.”

“No.”

I stared at the ceiling.

“I don’t like you anymore.”

“You never officially admitted you liked us.”

Daniel’s voice came through somewhere in the background.

“She called us for help. That means she likes us.”

Noah added, “Or we’re cheap labor.”

“You’re free labor,” I corrected.

Jasmine laughed.

They had spent the last three days rotating between the warehouses Pamela had identified.

They’d watched employees.

Photographed vehicles.

Tracked authorized shipments.

Followed two trucks that had left at unusual hours.

One turned out to be carrying damaged promotional displays for disposal.

The other had been making a perfectly legitimate emergency delivery,

Nothing.

Not one trace of the premium materials that had disappeared from Asher Corporation.

“No suspicious movement?” I asked.

“Some,” Jasmine answered. “Nothing connected to your missing inventory.”

Daniel came closer to the phone.

“We’ve documented everything anyway.”

“Send it to Pamela.”

“Already did.”

I smiled.

They really had made a good team.

Unfortunately, that meant my theory that the stolen materials were being stored inside one of our own warehouses was becoming less likely.

Either the merchandise had already been moved somewhere else…

Or someone outside Asher Corporation had been receiving it all along.

“Keep watching another two days,” I decided. “After that, pull back.”

“You sure?”

“Yes. I don’t want anyone noticing you.”

Noah spoke next.

“They won’t.”

I remembered what he’d looked like in his disguise and nearly laughed.

Jasmine had eventually helped despite my objections.

Somehow, she’d transformed a dangerous-looking martial artist into a tired delivery driver with glasses, badly

fitted clothing and enough facial hair to add ten years to his appearance.

I had almost failed to recognize him myself.

“Good. Be careful.”

“We will.”

I ended the call.

The warehouse surveillance hadn’t given us the breakthrough I’d hoped for.

The audit, however, was another story.

Pamela sent me the preliminary report that afternoon.

I opened it.

Then stopped.

“Oh.”

Jason looked up from across the bedroom.

That was basically where we lived now.

Me in bed.

Jason somewhere within ten feet of me, making sure I didn’t do anything the doctor had forbidden.

“What?”

“The audit.”

He came over.

“Marketing?”

Not just marketing.”

That wiped the amusement from his face.

Three departments had serious discrepancies.

Marketing.

Accounting.

Logistics.

Exactly the departments necessary to make something disappear.

Marketing ordered the materials.

Accounting processed the money.

Logistics controlled where the products went.

Jason sat beside me.

“That’s not coincidence.”

“No.”

The auditors hadn’t concluded that the three departments were working together.

Not yet.

But there were enough irregularities to justify expanding the investigation.

Invoices that didn’t properly correspond with inventory.

Shipment records with incomplete destinations.

Internal transfers without matching receipt confirmations.

Payments approved unusually quickly.

Supplier numbers that didn’t always match older contracts.

Nothing alone proved organized theft.

Together?

It looked terrible.

I called Pamela.

“How many people know?”

“About the discrepancies? Auditors, me, Jasper, and the department heads know questions are being asked.”

“Keep it that way.”

“Already done.”

“What about Emilia?”

That was always my first concern now.

“Does anyone suspect her?”

“Jasper says no.”

“Good.”

Pamela hesitated.

“Amber, this might be bigger than the marketing lead.”

“I know.”

“If accounting and logistics are involved-”

“They could have been moving merchandise anywhere.”

Including outside our warehouses.

Which explained why Jasmine’s team had found nothing.

The stolen products might never have stayed on Asher property long enough to be discovered.

“Follow the shipment discrepancies,” I said.

“We are.”

“Especially anything where logistics shows merchandise leaving but there’s no confirmed destination.”

“Understood.”

I ended the call.

Jason took the tablet from me.

“Enough.”

“I’ve been working for fifteen minutes.”

“Thirty-eight.”

I stared at him.

“Are you timing me?”

“Yes.”

“That’s disturbing.’

“Your blood pressure was high again this morning.”

I immediately became quiet.

That was the one argument I couldn’t dismiss.

I was five months pregnant now.

Pive months.

Halfway there.

And still on bed rest.

The babies were doing well.

I was the problem.

Apparently, my body had decided that running corporations, surviving assassination attempts, being trapped on an island during a category-five hurricane, and investigating international criminal networks while carrying twins was unreasonable.

I disagreed.

My doctor disagreed with my disagreement.

And my family had become unbearable.

Brain rest

Amber POV

My grandfather arrived that evening.

I should have known something was wrong when Mrs. Sun entered the bedroom with him.

Together.

They had been disagreeing about practically everything since I’d married Jason.

Seeing them united was terrifying.

“No.”

Neither had spoken yet.

Grandpa frowned.

“What do you mean, no?”

“Whatever you’re about to suggest.”

Mrs. Sun crossed her arms.

“You haven’t heard it.”

“I don’t need to. You’re cooperating.”

Jason coughed suspiciously.

I looked at him.

“Whose side are you on?”

“The babies’.”

Traitor number three. 1

Grandpa sat down.

“I want you admitted to the hospital.”

“No.”

“Amber.”

“No.”

“Your blood pressure remains unstable.”

“And I’m being monitored.”

Mrs. Sun spoke next.

“Then we’ve reached a compromise.”

I looked between them.

“I don’t like that word anymore.”

you refuse hospitalization, we’ll hire a doctor to remain here.”

I stared at her.

“A doctor.”

“Yes.”
