Why
Amber POV
The problem with discovering that my former fiancé and his father might be involved in something much darker than we’d imagined was that the rest of tny problems didn’t magically disappear.
Asher Corporation was still being rubbed.
Emilia was still undercover.
Jasper was still watching her.
The audit had started.
And somewhere, potentially eighteen months’ worth of premium materials had disappeared without appearing on any legitimate resale market.
I stared at the warehouse list on my tablet.
Jason glanced at me.
“What are you doing?”
“Resting.”
“You’re making that face.”
“What face?”
“The one that usually costs someone their job.”
I ignored him.
The audit had created exactly the reaction we’d wanted.
People were nervous. 1
Departments were checking records.
Managers were suddenly very interested in inventories they’d ignored for months.
If the people stealing from Asher Corporation had been storing the original materials, this was when they’d move them.
The problem was that I couldn’t exactly stake out a warehouse from bed.
Then I remembered three people who might actually consider that entertaining.
I opened our group chat.
Amber: Are you three busy?
Jasmine answered almost immediately.
Jasmine: Define busy.
Daniel followed.
Daniel: Don’t answer that. What do you need?

Then Noah.
Nah: Is it legal?
I stared at his message.
Amber: Yes.
Three dots appeared.
Noah: Less interesting, but continue.
I laughed.
Jason looked over.
“Who are you corrupting now?” 1
“Nobody.”
I started a video call.
All three answered.
Jasmine appeared first, dressed entirely in black as usual.
Daniel was eating something.
Noah looked suspiciously comfortable for a man I’d watched hunt people through a jungle not long ago.
“I need help,” I said.
Jasmine smiled.
“Finally.”
“Why does everyone enjoy when I say that?”
“Because your problems are interesting.”
“My last interesting problem nearly got us killed.”
“And yet we’re friends now.”
I blinked.
“Are we?”
Daniel looked offended.
“We survived an island together.”
Noah nodded solemnly.
“That’s at least friendship level three.”
I laughed.
Apparently, the four of us had clicked better than I’d realized.

Then Jasmine dropped another surprise.
We actually decided to keep the team together.”
I stared at them.
“What?”
“Us three,” Daniel explained. “And you whenever you’re available.”
“You created a permanent team?”
Noah shrugged.
“We work well together.”
Jasmine grinned.
“And apparently trouble likes you.”
“That is not a qualification.”
“It should be.”
I couldn’t argue with that.
“Fine. Team reunion. I need surveillance.”
All three became serious.
I explained the Asher Corporation investigation.
The inflated invoices.
The premium merchandise disappearing.
The cheap replacements.
Emilia confirming the operation.
The audit beginning before anyone had enough warning to completely cover their tracks.
“We haven’t found the original merchandise,” I finished. “Which means either it’s being sold privately or stored.”
“Warehouses,” Noah said.
“Exactly.”
I sent them the list.
Asher Corporation had several warehouses throughout River City and surrounding areas.
Some held promotional materials.
Others stored equipment, packaging or inventory before distribution.
“I want to know if anything leaves without authorization.”
Daniel nodded.

“Security records?”
Ramela has access.”
Jasmine was already scrolling through the list.
“Employees know us.”
That was true.
Their faces had been everywhere after the island.
Which brought me to Noah.
I smiled.
He immediately frowned.
“No.”
“I haven’t said anything.”
“I know that smile.”
Jason laughed beside me.
“See? I’m not the only one.”
I ignored him.
I
“Noah, I need you disguised.”
“How disguised?”
“Enough that nobody recognizes you.”
Jasmine looked delighted.
“Can I choose?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I need him to look boring.”
Daniel laughed.
Noah looked personally offended.
“I can look boring.”
Jasmine stared at him.
“No, you can’t.”
“Yes, I can.”
“You look like you could break someone’s spine while waiting for coffee.”

I covered my mouth.
son wasn’t even pretending not to listen anymore.
“Hat,” I suggested. “Glasses. Different clothes. Change the way you walk if necessary.”
Noah sighed.
“Fine.”
“Nobody confronts anyone,” I warned. “You’re watching. That’s it.”
Jasmine looked disappointed.
“Even if they run?”
“Especially if they run. Follow them.”
Daniel nodded.
“Understood.”
“And if anything feels wrong, leave.”
Jasmine rolled her eyes. 1
“I’m serious.”
“We survived the island.”
“Exactly. I’d like to keep that record intact.”
My next call was Pamela.
“I have people for the warehouses.”
“You have people?”
“I borrowed some.”
“Amber.”
I sent her their contact information.
She went silent.
Then-
“Are these your island teammates?”
“Three of them.”
“You’re sending military operatives to watch corporate warehouses?”
“When you say it like that, it sounds excessive.”
“It is excessive.”
“Good. Coordinate with them.”

send them warehouse schedules, authorized shipments, vehicle registrations and security access.”
“Don’t tell warehouse management.”
“Obviously.”
“And keep Emilia completely separated from this.”.
“Jasper already has her covered.”
Perfect.
Now we waited.

If somebody panicked because of the audit and tried to move stolen inventory, Jasmine, Noah and Daniel would see it.
Jason spent most of the afternoon working quietly beside me.
Unlike me, he was actually capable of sitting still while investigating.
I found it irritating.
Then his phone vibrated.
He looked at it.
Stopped.
And sat straighter.
I immediately noticed.
“What?”
He didn’t answer.
“Jason.”
“I might have something.”
That got my full attention.
He turned his laptop toward me.
A photograph appeared.
Oscar.
Not the security footage from White Manor.
A much clearer image.
He was walking through an airport.
His face was partially obscured, but there was no mistaking him.
“Where?”

“Nevermore.”
tared at the screen.
“You’re sure?”
“One of my contacts is.”
Jason still maintained connections under his Cronos identity….
