No mercy

Amber POV

Nobody stepped into the hidden rooms.

Not yet.

Considering everything we had discovered on the island-the tunnels, the hidden women, the command centers, and the fact that people had apparently been hunted there for years-blindly entering an underground bunker seemed like a terrible idea.

Jason was the first one to voice it.

“Before anyone goes in, we need to make sure there aren’t any cameras.”

Franklin immediately nodded.

“Or microphones.”

Maurice, one of Cloud Country’s guides, stood up from the corner where he had been studying the cave map.

“I’ll help.”

Jasmine stretched on one of the chairs.

“You three have fun with your spy movie.”

Jason ignored her and grabbed a flashlight.

“Nobody enters until we’re done.”

For the next twenty minutes, the three of them inspected every wall, every vent, and every light fixture.

At first, they found nothing.

Then Franklin suddenly cursed.

“Found one.”

Everyone crowded around him.

Hidden behind a ventilation grate was a small black camera.

Jason immediately began looking around the room.

“If there’s one, there are more.”

He was right.

Maurice found another one above the kitchen entrance.

Jason discovered one hidden inside a smoke detector.

Franklin found the last camera near the hallway leading to the bedrooms.

Four cameras.

All aimed at the entrance of the safe house.

Daniel frowned.

Are they active?”

Maurice connected his tablet to one of them and shook his head.

“They don’t appear to be transmitting.”

“That doesn’t mean they won’t start transmitting later,” Jason said.

Nobody argued.

Within minutes, the cameras had been dismantled and placed in a box near the entrance.

Jasmine poked one of them with her boot.

“I don’t know what’s creepier: the fact that someone installed cameras here or the fact that Franklin looks Kappy while dismantling them.”

Franklin shrugged.

“I have many talents.”

“Being suspicious isn’t a talent.”

“It absolutely is.”

The conversation shifted as soon as Emory walked in with the six women and Oliver.

The atmosphere immediately changed.

One of the women looked exhausted, another could barely stand, and Oliver was holding onto Emory’s hand as if letting go would make the entire world collapse.

Lakeview’s captain stood up.

“They should take one of the bedrooms.”

Nobody objected.

One by one, the soldiers began nodding.

“The women and the child stay together.”

“Agreed.”

“They’ve been through enough.”

Oliver looked around nervously.

“Will someone stay nearby?”

Emory smiled softly. 1

“Of course.”

The boy nodded and walked into the room with the others.

The remaining soldiers began discussing how to divide the space.

River City took one room.

Som took another.

Cloud Country shared with Snake Nest.

The atmosphere altnost felt normal.

Almost.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Mr. Stait.

I answered immediately.

“Please tell me you have good news.”

The old man’s face appeared on the screen, illuminated by flashing lights and dozens of monitors.

“I don’t.”

That wasn’t promising.

“The hurricane will reach the island in less than thirty minutes.”

Around me, the wind outside howled through the mountain entrance.

It had already become strong enough to shake some of the loose metal sheets near the cave.

Franklin looked outside and swallowed.

“It already feels bad.”

Mr. Stait shook his head.

“It just got worse.”

My stomach sank.

“What happened?”

“The hurricane center updated their report five minutes ago.”

The old man removed his glasses.

“It’s now classified as a category five hurricane.”

The entire room went silent.

Even Jasmine stopped joking.

“A category five?” Daniel repeated.

Mr. Stait nodded.

“The winds have intensified much faster than expected.”

Nobody needed an explanation.

Category five meant devastation.

Buildings destroyed.

Trees uprooted.

Entire roads erased.

And we were trapped on an island in the middle of the ocean.

Jason stood up immediately.

“Move everything inside.”

The cave erupted into action.

Boxes of food.

Medical supplies. 1

Water containers.

Blankets.

Generators.

Weapons.

Everyone worked together, carrying everything into the hidden safe house as the wind outside continued to grow stronger.

I was helping Noah move emergency rations when Jason’s voice echoed from the hallway.

“Amber!”

I dropped the box.

“What happened?”

Jason was standing near the back wall of the bunker, holding open yet another steel door.

I stared at him in disbelief.

“Another one?”

He laughed nervously.

“Apparently, the people who built this place really liked secret exits.”

I walked over.

Beyond the door was a narrow tunnel leading upward, eventually connecting back to the cave.

An emergency exit.

A second way out.

Maurice shook his head.

“How many escape routes does one bunker need?”

Franklin looked at the tunnel and shrugged.

Enough to escape a category-five hurricane, apparently.”

Thunder exploded outside.

The lights flickered.

the traffickers, and the island owner were no longer our biggest problém.

Nature itself had decided to join the fight.

And judging by the sound of the wind outside, it wasn’t planning to show mercy to anyone.

Buried the truth

Amber POV

The hurricane reached the island fifteen minutes later.

At first, it sounded like distant thunder.

Then the entire mountain began to shake.

The wind howled through the tunnels like some ancient creature trapped beneath the earth, slamming against the cave entrance with enough force to make the walls tremble.

Oliver jumped awake at the first deafening gust.

Several of the women instinctively covered their ears.

Nobody said a word.

Nobody complained.

The safe house was cold, damp, and uncomfortably crowded. Blankets covered the floor, soldiers slept sitting against the walls, and the air smelled of wet clothes and exhaustion.

Still, nobody dared complain.

Because outside, nature itself was tearing the island apart.

The first night was the worst.

The second was simply endless.

And by the third day, we had all stopped asking when it would end.

Communication with Mr. Stait became sporadic.

Sometimes we managed to talk for ten minutes.

Sometimes only for thirty seconds.

The signal disappeared constantly, forcing us to reconnect over and over again.

During one of those calls, Mr. Stait looked more exhausted than I had ever seen him.

“The other countries are asking for you.”

I frowned.

“For me?”

“They want to speak with their teams.”

So, for hours, my phone became the only bridge between the island and the outside world.

Cloud Country’s president spoke with Maurice.

Snake Nest’s military command contacted Héctor.

Lakeview’s defense minister spoke with all four teams.

The leaders of Sum nearly cried when they saw Franklin alive.

And every single call ended exactly the same way.

“Do you know anything about Evermore?”

At first, nobody had answers.

Then the truth slowly began to spread.

Two entire teams had disappeared.

One from Rou Country.

All four teams from Evermore.

And for the first time since the massacre, the governments realized that Evermore had not escaped.

They had died alongside everyone else.

The silence on the other side of the calls was always the same.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Ashamed.

Because for three days, people had blamed Evermore for everything.

And now, it seemed they had been victims too. 1

The secretary of defense from Sum was the first to say it aloud.

“We accused dead men.” 1

Nobody answered.

Because there was nothing to say.

Between calls with governments and military officials, I contacted my family.

The moment my grandfather appeared on the screen, he immediately started shouting.

“Amber Asher, when you get back, I’m locking you inside the estate for the next ten years!”

I laughed for the first time in days.

“Hello to you too, Grandpa.”

“You disappeared in the middle of a game!”

“You say that as if it had been my idea.”

“I knew you were alive.”

“I’m okay.”

“Are the children safe?”

“They’re fine.”

Mrs. Sun burst into tears the moment she saw Jason.

“You idiot!”

Jason smiled weakly.

“Good morning, Mother.”

“Don’t ‘good morning’ me!”

Mr. Sun leaned into the camera.

“Son, next time you want to participate in a military competition, try golf instead.”

Jason actually laughed.

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

For the next three days, I helped every team contact their families. 1

Soldiers who had spent years pretending to be fearless cried while speaking to their parents.

One of the Lakeview girls spent two hours talking to her younger brother.

Franklin had to reassure his mother at least six times that he still had all his limbs. 1

And Oliver…
