Fast footsteps.
Pally, Jastnine Spoke again, breathing heavily.
“I shot Alexander.”
“You what?”
“Relax. Paint rounds.”
I stood up so quickly that my chair nearly fell backward.
“Jasmine, are you insane?”
“Probably.”
Noah’s laughter echoed in the background.
“What happened?”
“I distracted him long enough for the kid to run.”
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“Did Alexander see you?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m already gone.”
The radio crackled as Jasmine ran through the forest.
“He was focused on the boy. By the time he realized where the shots came from, we were already moving.”
I forced myself to sit back down.
“Okay. Good. Keep moving and don’t engage.”
Jasmine laughed softly.
“Too late for that.”
I rubbed my forehead.
Somewhere on the island, Alexander Vincent had cornered a young competitor for reasons I didn’t understand.
Jasmine had just shot him.
And somehow, I had the feeling that things were about to become much, much worse.
Because there was only one person on this island reckless enough to provoke Alexander Vincent and laugh while doing it.
And unfortunately for me, she was on my team.

Bullets
Amber POV
Jasmine, Noah, and Daniel were running through the forest, and honestly, I wasn’t entirely convinced Jasmine understood that we were in danger.
Because all I could hear through the comms was laughter.
Actual laughter.
“Jasmine, could you please take this seriously for five minutes?”
Her laugh echoed through my headset.
“I am taking it seriously.”
“You’re laughing.”
“Running through the jungle while shooting people with paint bullets is fun, Amber.”
Noah sighed on the other end of the line.
“Please ignore her.”
“I heard that!”
Daniel’s voice cut through the argument.
“Can we focus on not dying?”
I smiled despite myself and turned back to the screens.
The satellite feed showed dozens of heat signatures scattered across the island. Team Two was moving south, Team Four had stopped near a river, and several foreign teams were converging near the eastern side of the island.
Then something caught my attention.
A command center.
Hidden at the foot of a hill, partially concealed by trees.
I quickly enlarged the image.
“Guys, I found-”
The words died in my throat.
The entire structure exploded.
The shockwave threw dirt and debris into the air, and the screen shook violently as flames engulfed the building.
For a moment, I simply stared.
“What the hell?”
One of the guards rushed toward my desk.
“What happened?”

I zoomed in on the burning remains.
e command center was gone.
Completely gone.
I grabbed my radio.
“Everyone, be careful. One of the command centers just exploded.”
There was a moment of silence.
Naturally, Noah interpreted my warning as some sort of challenge.
“Coordinates?”
I blinked.
“That wasn’t the point of my message.”
Jasmine burst out laughing.
“See? Noah wants to investigate.”
Daniel immediately interrupted.
“We should make sure nobody was hurt.”
I switched to Daniel’s body camera just in time to see the three of them sprinting toward the smoke rising above the trees.
The closer they got, the worse it looked.
The entire front wall had collapsed.
Flames licked at the remains of the structure.
Then movement.
Someone stumbled out of the smoke carrying an injured man over his shoulder.
Daniel accelerated.
“There’s someone alive!”
Without hesitation, Jasmine and Noah rushed past him and disappeared into the ruins.
“Jasmine, Noah, get out of there!” I shouted.
No answer.
A few seconds later, Noah emerged carrying another unconscious man.
Jasmine followed, dragging a third soldier behind her just as the remaining support beams gave way.
The entire structure collapsed.
Dust and smoke filled Daniel’s camera.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Finally, Jasmine coughed.
Okay, that was close.”
Daniel immediately knelt beside the injured men.
“Who are you?”
One of them, a blond man with blood covering half his uniform, struggled to sit up.
“We’re… Team Two from Sum.”
My heart skipped.
Sum.
I leaned closer to the screen.
Then I recognized him.
He was one of the officers from the hospital when grandfather was attacked.
Daniel quickly examined his injuries.
And then my blood ran cold.
Those weren’t paint marks.
Those were bullet wounds.
Real bullet wounds.
Daniel looked up, horrified.
“These aren’t from the competition.”
The man coughed violently.
“We were ambushed.”
Noah frowned.
“By who?”
The soldier shook his head.
“I don’t know. They came into the command center…”
He swallowed painfully.
“They didn’t even take the flag.
Jasmine stopped smiling.
“What?”
“They shot us and left.”
The cave around me became completely silent.

Daniel looked down at the wounds again.
hese are real bullets.”
The soldier nodded weakly.
“Not paint rounds.”
I stared at the screen, unable to process what I was hearing.
This was supposed to be a game.
A ridiculous military game to determine who would inherit an island.
The weapons they had given us shot paint.
The rules specifically forbade serious injuries.
Nobody was supposed to die.
And yet someone had just blown up an entire command center.
Someone had entered, ignored the flag, shot four soldiers with real ammunition, and left.
I forced myself to think.
Alexander Vincent.
No.
It couldn’t be him.
Not right now.
Jasmine had just shot him and one of his teammates, the last time we had seen him, he had been busy holding Franklin hostage.
Unless he could somehow be in two places at once, someone else was responsible.
Someone was using the competition as cover.
Not to win the island.
Not to steal flags.
To eliminate military personnel from the other countries.
I slowly leaned back in my chair.
One of the guards looked at me.
“Do you know who did this?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
For the first time since arriving on the island, I wasn’t thinking about strategy.
I wasn’t thinking about flags.

I wasn’t thinking about winning.
Because somewhere on this island, hidden among two hundred and fifty-six competitors, someone had brought real weapons.
Someone had decided that this wasn’t a game.
And suddenly, the island felt much, much smaller.
The question was no longer who would win.
The question was who was trying to destroy us all.
And more importantly-
Who would be next?

Scapegoat
Amber POV
At first, I thought the satellite feed was malfunctioning.
One command center exploding could have been an accident.
Two was suspicious.
Three was impossible.
I stared at the screen as another red marker vanished, replaced by smoke rising above the jungle
“What the hell is happening?”
One of the guards stepped closer to my station.
Before either of us could say anything else, every screen in the cave suddenly turned black.
A deafening alarm echoed throughout the island.
WARNING. WARNING. WARNING.
Even the radios on my desk began to emit the same sound.
Then the face of the island’s owner appeared on every monitor.
The old man looked pale.
Far paler than before.
“Ladies and gentlemen, due to an emergency, the competition is hereby suspended.”
My stomach dropped.
Around me, the alarms continued to ring.
“I repeat: the competition is suspended.”
The old man looked down at something off-screen before continuing.
“All participants are ordered to immediately return to the original landing site. Evacuation procedures are now in effect.”
One of the guards cursed under his breath.
The old man took a deep breath.
“We have confirmed that one of Evermore country’s teams has gone rogue.”
The entire cave fell silent.
“There are already four reported casualties.”
My blood ran cold.
Four casualties.
Not injuries.

Not eliminations.
Casualties.
“The military forces of all participating countries are already mobilizing. You are ordered to avoid any confrontation and proceed directly to the evacuation point.”
The transmission ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the radios exploded with voices.
“What happened?”
“Did he say casualties?”
“Is this real?”
I grabbed my headset.
“Everyone, quiet.”
The comms immediately fell silent.
I switched channels until all three River City team leaders were connected.
“Listen carefully.”
Jasmine’s voice was the first to answer.
“We’re here.”
Team Two answered next.
“Go ahead.”
Finally, Team Four joined.
“Connected.”
I took a deep breath.
“The competition has been suspended.”
Daniel cursed quietly.
“What?”
“The island owner confirmed that one of Evermore country’s teams has gone rogue.”
Silence.
Then Noah spoke.
“Define rogue.”
I looked at the smoke rising from another command center in the distance.
“They’re killing people.”

The words tasted bitter.
There are already four confirmed casualties.”
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Even Jasmine had gone quiet.
I continued.
“Drop everything. Forget the flags. Forget the competition.”
One of the team leaders interrupted.
“What about the command centers?”
“Abandon them.”
“The supplies?”
“Leave them.”
“The island?”
“I don’t care about the island.”
The words came out harsher than I intended.
“What matters right now is getting everyone home alive.”
Jasmine finally spoke.
“What about Sum?”
I froze.
Jason.
Franklin.
The thought hit me like a punch to the chest.
I pushed it aside.
“We’re not splitting up.”
“But-”
“That’s an order.”
