Amber POV
I don’t remember the drive from the airport to the school.
One moment I was on the plane.
The next I was standing outside the front gates, surrounded by flashing police lights.
The school grounds were eerily quiet.
Parents had already collected their children.
Teachers stood together in small groups, many of them crying.
Alex had never failed to come home.
Not once.
Jason met me before I could even reach the entrance.
Without saying a word, he pulled me into his arms.
“I’m sorry.”
I shook my head.
“This isn’t your fault.”
He rested his forehead against mine.
“We’re going to find him.”
“We have to.”
The search had already spread beyond the school.
Security guards.
Police.
Military personnel.
Volunteers.
Everyone was looking.
The first clue came less than an hour later.
One of the guards called over the radio.
“We found something.”
Jason and I ran.
Lying on the shoulder of a road behind the school…
Was Alex’s smartwatch.

I immediately recognized it.
ad designed every emergency feature myself.
The screen was cracked.
The strap had been torn.
I carefully picked it up.
“No…”
Jason knelt beside me.
“He wouldn’t take it off.”
“No.”
My voice trembled.
“He loved this watch.”
“He knew it could call us.”
I turned it over in my hands.
“It was removed.”
A soldier approached us.
“Mrs. Sun…”
“Mrs.
“We found something else.”
Only thirty meters farther down the road…
Lay Alex’s backpack.
Its contents had been emptied onto the ground.
School books.
Colored pencils.
A half-finished drawing.
His favorite dinosaur keychain.
Everything…
Except Alex.
A few minutes later another officer arrived carrying a clear evidence bag.
Inside…
Were Alex’s shoes.
I felt my knees give out.

Jason caught me before I hit the ground.
hey made him take them off…”
I whispered. 1
“He would never leave without them.”
Jason held me tighter.
“No.”
“He wouldn’t.”
There was no longer any doubt.
This wasn’t a child wandering away.
It was a kidnapping.
The news spread across the country within the hour.
Every television station interrupted its programming.
Every news website carried Alex’s photograph.
Even Mrs. Sun stepped before the cameras.
Her voice remained steady despite the tears in her eyes.
“Our grandson has been kidnapped.”
“We ask anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact the authorities immediately.”
“There will be no questions asked.”
“Only bring our grandson home.”
For once…
The media wasn’t chasing gossip.
They were searching with us.
Alex’s smiling school photograph appeared everywhere.
Jason’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
The entire command center fell silent.
He answered immediately.
“This is Jason Sun.”
No one spoke.

Marcus frowned.
“They wanted to know if we’d answer.”
Pamela nodded.
“A test.”
Jason handed the number to the investigators.
“Trace it.”
The technicians were already working.
Hours passed.
Every road.
Every warehouse.
Every abandoned building.
Nothing.

Marcus, Pamela, Jason and I searched alongside the investigators instead of waiting inside the command center.
Waiting was impossible.
Late that evening, Jason received another call.
This time from one of his oldest business contacts in River City.
The man’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“Jason…”
“What I’m about to tell you isn’t confirmed.”
“But you need to hear it.”
Jason activated the speaker.
“What is it?”
“The President of River City.”
The room became silent.
“What about him?”
“I’ve heard… from people close to his family… that his granddaughter has been telling classmates she and Alex were friends.”
Jason exchanged a look with me.

“Friends?”
don’t know if it’s true.”
“But several people heard her say it.”
“And the President has been asking unusual questions about your family over the past week.”
The call ended.
No one rushed to conclusions.
It wasn’t evidence.
Just…
A direction.
Almost simultaneously, another team entered the command center.
Military Intelligence.
Their commander placed several photographs on the table.
“We reviewed every traffic camera within five kilometers.”
He pointed toward a dark vehicle.
“A black SUV.”
“It was photographed near the school less than ten minutes before Alex disappeared.”
He slid another photograph forward.
“We’ve already checked.”
“It doesn’t belong to any faculty member.”
“Any parent.”
“Any employee.”
“Or any registered visitor.”
Jason leaned closer.
“So someone waited.”
The commander nodded once.
“It appears so.”
Just as midnight approached…
