believe the worst
Jason POV
Breakfast ended far too quietly.
One by one, everyone excused themselves.
Marcus stepped outside to make a phone call.
Before long, only Pamela and I remained in the dining room.
She slowly placed her coffee cup on the table and walked toward me.
Her expression wasn’t angry.
It was disappointed.
“What the hell is your problem?”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“You heard me.’
She folded her arms.
“What is wrong with you?”
“You’ve been ignoring Amber for days.”
“You barely looked at her.”
“And this morning…”
Her voice hardened.
“…you were downright rude to the mother of your children.”
Something inside me snapped.
I let out a bitter laugh.
“The mother of my children?”
The words left my mouth before I could stop them.
“Are we even sure they’re mine?”
The silence that followed was deafening.
Then…
A soft gasp.
Pamela’s eyes widened.
My blood ran cold.

Slowly…
slowly…
I turned around.
Amber stood in the doorway.
She had heard everything.
For one endless second, neither of us moved.
Her face had gone completely pale.
Her eyes searched mine, not with anger…
But with disbelief.
Pain.
A kind of heartbreak I had never wanted to be responsible for.
Before I could say a single word-
Slap. 2
Pamela’s hand connected with my face so hard my head turned sideways.
“What is wrong with you?”
She didn’t wait for an answer.
She ran after Amber.
By the time I reached the hallway…
They were both gone.
I stood there, unable to move.
A few moments later, Marcus walked in through the front entrance.
He looked around.
“Where’s Amber?”
No one answered.
Then he looked at my face.
Then toward the open front door.
His expression darkened immediately.
“What happened?”
I swallowed.
“…She heard.”

Marcus frowned.
Heard what?”
te
I repeated my own words.
Every single one.
For several long seconds, Marcus simply stared at me.
Then…
“What the fuck is wrong with you?”
His voice echoed through the hall.
“After everything that woman has done for you.”
“After everything she’s sacrificed.”
“You say that?”
I rubbed my face.
“I had my reasons.”
Marcus crossed his arms.
“Then explain.”
So I did.
I told him about Monica.
About the second fertility report.
About her telling me she had overheard Amber and the doctor changing my results.
About the report that claimed I was almost infertile.
When I finally finished speaking…
Marcus laughed.
It wasn’t a happy laugh.
It was the kind of laugh people made when they couldn’t believe what they had just heard.
“I never thought I’d see the day.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“I never thought you could be fooled so easily.”
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?”

Marcus looked genuinely disappointed.
ason.”
“Everyone knew Monica had the biggest crush on you.”
I blinked.
“…What?”
He stared at me. 1
“You didn’t know?”
I slowly shook my head.
Marcus sighed.
“Of course you didn’t.”
“You were too busy being oblivious.”
He walked closer.
“Did you ask a doctor which report was real?”
“No.” 1
“Did you verify whether Monica’s report had been altered?”
“No.” 1
“Did you contact the fertility clinic?”
“No.” 1
“Did you do anything…”
“…other than believe the worst about your wife?”
I couldn’t answer.
Because I hadn’t.
Monica had approached me while Amber and Pamela were shopping.
Everything had happened so quickly.
I’d spent the last several days trapped inside my own head.
Marcus looked at me sadly.
“You may have just lost your wife.”
The words hit harder than Pamela’s slap.
“Not because Amber lied.”
“But because you were willing to believe she did.”

He turned and walked away.
Deaving me completely alone.
For the first time since Motrica had handed me those papers…
I began to wonder.
What if Marcus was right?
Without wasting another second, I picked up my phone and called the Mayor of Sum..
He answered almost immediately.
“Mr. Sun?”
“I need a favor.”
“Anything.”
