Amber and Jason had gone back to River City to deal with problems at their companies.
I knew they hadn’t wanted to leave.
For months, they had practically put their businesses on hold to protect us, move everyone to Sum, build the school, restore the castle, and somehow still make time for every family dinner.
Now reality had finally caught up with them.
Someone had to keep their companies running.
That someone was them.
The castle felt… quieter without them.
Not empty.
Just different.
Rose and Alice, however, had reached a completely different conclusion.
“We should go get them,” Alice declared for what had to be the tenth time that morning.
Rose nodded enthusiastically.
“They probably miss us.”
I looked up from my book.
“No.”
“They’re working.”
“They’re adults.”
Alice folded her arms.
“They’re bored.”
I blinked.
“I’m pretty sure they’re not.”
“They are.”
She nodded with complete confidence.
“They just don’t know it yet.”
I couldn’t help laughing.
The truth was…
They weren’t worried.
They were bored.

Very, very bored.
Apparently living in a centuries-old castle wasn’t exciting anymore.
Imagine that.
I looked around the enormous sitting room.
Stone walls.
Massive fireplaces.
Hidden passages.
Ancient paintings.
A library larger than my old school.
We literally lived in a castle.
I mentally added a generous amount of sarcasm to that thought.
Apparently castles became boring too.
Alice dramatically threw herself across one of the sofas.
“We need a mission.”
Rose immediately agreed.
“Amber always gives us missions.”
I smiled softly.
Rose had changed so much.
When we first rescued her from the Beckers, she barely spoke above a whisper.
Now…
She laughed.
She played.
She argued with Alice.
She smiled almost every day.
Jason had encouraged it.
“They’re children,” he had told us one evening.
“They deserve to act like children.”
He’d said it so quietly that I almost hadn’t heard him.
Later, when Amber asked why it mattered so much, he’d simply answered,
“Because I know what it’s like when you don’t get to be one.”
“Y།

No one had asked any more questions after that.
eyes wandered across the room.
Alex sat in his favorite armchair, completely focused on his tablet.
His fingers moved rapidly across the screen while he muttered to himself.
He was probably the safest person to interrupt.
Unlike Alice and Rose, Alex always had a plan.
Usually several.
I walked over and leaned against the chair.
“What are you doing?”
He didn’t even look up.
“Research.”
I smiled.
“Military?”
“No.”
“Cameras?”
“No.”
“Another one of those online missions with your friends?”
“No.”
Now he finally looked up.
“I’m shopping.”
I blinked.
“…Shopping?”
He turned the tablet toward me.
Instead of maps…
Or security systems…
Or strategy games…
The screen was filled with baby cribs.
Tiny clothes.
Strollers.
Blankets.

Baby bottles.
Ntared at him.
“Alex?”
He looked completely serious.
“I’m trying to buy things for the babies.”
“Oh.”
I sat beside him.
“How’s it going?”
He sighed dramatically.
“Terrible.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know what they’ll look like.”
I frowned.
“…Why does that matter?”
He looked at me as though the answer should have been obvious.
“What if they have Jason’s hair?”
He scrolled down. 1
“Then maybe blue blankets.”
“What if they have Amber’s eyes?”
He sighed again.
“What if one is a boy and the other is a girl?”
“I don’t know what to buy.”
I couldn’t help laughing.
“You know…”
I pointed toward the tablet.
“…babies don’t usually care what color their blankets are.”
Alex looked unconvinced.
“I still want to get it right.”
That was so incredibly Alex.
He wanted everything to be perfect.

An idea suddenly crossed my mind.
WWhy don’t we ask Grandma Sun?”
He looked up immediately.
Mrs. Sun adored shopping.
Especially if it involved the family.
“She’d love that.”
I smiled.
“Exactly.”
Alex stood so quickly he almost dropped the tablet.
“We should invite everyone.”
Within minutes we had gathered in the living room.
“Shopping?” Mrs. Sun repeated.
Her eyes lit up.
“For my future great-grandbabies?”
