Leave it to Mr. Stanley

Amber POV

Everything was going smoothly.

Better than any of us had dared to hope.

Mr. Stanley had answered every question with honesty and dignity. The reporters had remained surprisingly respectful, and Iris had slowly begun to relax beside me.

Then one reporter stood up.

“Mr. Stanley!”

The room quieted.

“What about Iris Stanley’s engagement to the Owens family?”

The atmosphere changed instantly.

I saw Iris stiffen beside me.

Mr. Stanley glanced toward me.

I gave him a small nod before stepping forward and taking the microphone..

“That is a fair question.”

The cameras immediately turned toward me.

“Yes, the Owens family approached us after discovering Iris’s identity.”

I chose my words carefully.

“The engagement in question was arranged when Iris was still a baby.”

A wave of murmurs spread through the audience.

“It was originally intended to strengthen the relationship between the Stanley and Owens families.”

I paused.

“However, circumstances have changed.”

I looked toward Iris before continuing.

“We are not rejecting the idea completely.”

Another wave of whispers.

“But whether that engagement ever becomes a marriage…”

I smiled warmly at Iris.

“…will depend entirely on Iris.”

She looked at me with wide eyes.

“No one-not me, not Jason, not Mr. Stanley, and not the Owens family-will decide her future for her.”

The reporters hurriedly wrote down every word.

There is something else I’d like everyone to remember.”

I turned back toward the cameras.

“Iris is the last remaining heir of the Stanley family.”

Silence filled the courtyard.

“If she chooses to marry one day, whoever marries Iris will marry into the Stanley family.”

I let that sentence settle before continuing.

“The Stanley family line will continue through Iris.”

“Not the other way around.”

The reporters exchanged surprised looks.

It wasn’t the answer they had expected.

Then, from somewhere near the back of the crowd, a young voice called out.

“I don’t have a problem with that!”

Every head turned.

Including mine.

Francis Owens stood among the spectators, looking slightly embarrassed but refusing to back down.

He shrugged.

“I have brothers.”

The silence somehow became even louder.

“They can continue the Owens family.”

He smiled sheepishly.

“I really don’t mind joining the Stanley family.”

For a moment no one spoke.

Then Iris’s face turned the brightest shade of red I had ever seen.

Even her ears turned pink.

Soft laughter spread through the crowd.

One elderly reporter chuckled and called out,

“Easy there, young man.”

Another laughed.

“Down, boy.”

“You’re both far too young for wedding plans.”

e entire audience laughed good-naturedly.

Francis blinked, looking genuinely confused.

“But…”

He scratched the back of his head.

“If we’re both too young…”

He looked toward the reporters.

“…then why expose Iris now?”

The laughter slowly faded.

He continued.

“Why not let her enjoy the last two years of freedom she has before everyone starts treating her like an heir?”

The question caught everyone off guard.

Even me.

He sounded completely sincere.

I looked at him carefully.

There it was.

That tiny spark in his eyes.

He knew exactly what he was doing.

He wasn’t only defending Iris.

He was quietly criticizing whoever had forced her into the public eye.

Without accusing anyone directly.

Smart kid.

Very smart.

I found myself smiling.

Maybe I had judged Francis too quickly.

He wasn’t trying to manipulate Iris.

He was trying to protect her in the only way he could.

And judging by the thoughtful expressions spreading across the reporters’ faces…

His words had reached them.

One journalist slowly raised her hand.
