A Woman Worth Billions Dated the Wrong Brother novel Chapter 268

Monitor Mom

Monster mom

Amber POV

Pregnancy was a scam.

A complete scam.

Nobody had warned me.

Not properly.

Apparently, creating a human being came with a long list of side effects nobody talked about enough.

For example, I could no longer stand garlic.

Garlic.

One of my favorite ingredients.

Now, the mere smell made me gag.

The castle’s kitchen had become enemy territory.

Three times this week, I had walked in confidently only to turn around and run away seconds later.

The staff was deeply concerned.

The children were confused.

And Alice was watching me.

Constantly.

Everywhere.

Like a tiny detective.

I should have known that was a problem.

Alice POV

Something was wrong with Mom. 1

Very wrong.

At first, I thought she was sick.

Then I started paying attention.

And when I pay attention, I notice things.

A lot of things.

For example, Mom used to like garlic.

I know because she put garlic on almost everything.

Then one day she walked into the kitchen, smelled garlic bread, made a weird face, and ran away.

Ran away.

From bread.

That was suspicious.

Very suspicious.

Then I noticed she stopped drinking coffee.

Now, I don’t know a lot about grown-ups, but I know Mom likes coffee.

She drinks coffee when she works.

She drinks coffee when she’s tired.

She drinks coffee when she’s happy.

She drinks coffee when she’s angry.

She drinks coffee all the time.

Then suddenly she stopped.

That was even more suspicious.

Then there was Dad.

Dad kept covering her whenever they went outside.

Jackets.

Hats.

Umbrellas.

Sunglasses.

Scarves.

One time I thought she was preparing to rob a bank.

Another time I thought she was disguising herself.

Then I heard her say she was eating for two.

For two.

Not for one.

For two.

I immediately stopped walking.

Because there was only one Mom.

At least I thought there was only one Mom.

Unless…

There were two.

eyes widened.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The real Mom had been replaced.

Obviously.

I called an emergency meeting.

Alex came first because he always comes first.

Rose came second because she likes chaos.

Iris wasn’t there because she was busy doing boring teenager things.

“I have terrible news,” I told them.

Alex looked concerned.

“Did someone hack the school?”

“No.”

“Worse.”

Rose gasped.

“What?”

I lowered my voice.

“Mom is a monster.”

Silence.

Alex stared at me.

Rose stared at me.

I nodded seriously.

“I have evidence.”

I explained everything.

The garlic.

The coffee.

The sunlight.

The eating for two.

The mood swings.

The weird naps.

The random gagging.

The suspicious behavior.

By the end, Rose looked convinced.

Alex looked concerned.

Mostly concerned about me.

Which was rude.

We began our investigation.

The first test was mirrors.

Everybody knows vampires don’t show up in mirrors.

I carried a mirror around all day.

Then I jumped in front of Mom.

She nearly dropped her tablet.

“Alice!”

I held up the mirror.

Mom was there.

Clearly.

I sighed.

Maybe not a vampire.

The second test was silver.

I poked her with a silver fork during lunch.

She yelped.

Everybody stared at me.

Mom stared at me.

Dad stared at me.

I smiled innocently.

Nobody believed me.

The test was inconclusive.

Then something incredible happened.

Mom vanished.

Actually vanished.

One moment she was walking down the hallway.

The next she disappeared into a wall.

A wall.

I screamed.

Rose screamed.

Alex dropped his tablet.

Mom was gone.

Gone.

I pointed dramatically.

“I KNEW IT!”

Fifteen minutes later she came back out.

Like nothing had happened.

Definitely monster behavior.

I added it to my evidence list.

A few days later Iris caught us spying.

Again.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“Monster hunting,” I answered.

Iris blinked.

Then she blinked again.

Then she looked at Alex.

Then Rose.

Then me.

The explanation took a while. 1

Mostly because Alex kept saying he wasn’t convinced while continuing to participate.

Traitor.

When I finished, Iris looked horrified.

Not because Mom was a monster.

Because she thought we were ridiculous.

Then she looked at Mom.

Mom was staring sadly at a plate of garlic bread.

Then she looked at Dad.

Then at Mom again.
