A Woman Worth Billions Dated the Wrong Brother novel Chapter 223

Amber POV

my grandfather had always felt indestructible to me.

Cold. Brilliant. Untouchable.

The kind of man who bent entire industries through sheer force of will.

And now he was behind those operating room doors fighting to breathe because someone decided he needed to disappear.

I suddenly understood something horrifying.

The Vincents were escalating because we were getting close.

Too close.

The castle.

The alexandrite mine.

The history.

We accidentally stepped into something they considered important enough to kill for.

The operating room doors suddenly opened.

Every person in the hallway stood instantly.

The doctor stepped out looking exhausted beneath the surgical mask hanging loosely around his neck.

“Chairman Asher survived surgery.”

Relief exploded through the hallway immediately.

Several executives visibly sagged against the walls.

Someone behind me actually started crying quietly.

But the doctor raised one hand before anyone could celebrate fully.

“He is not stable yet.”

Silence fell again immediately.

“The poison caused severe cardiovascular distress,” the doctor explained carefully. “We managed to stabilize his heart rhythm, but the next twenty-four hours will be critical.”

Critical again.

That word again.

“When can we see him?” Jason asked immediately.

“Briefly,” the doctor answered. “One at a time.”

The board immediately looked toward me.

Not toward Jason.

Not toward the executives.

Toward me.

The heir.

I stood slowly, my legs suddenly unsteady beneath me.

Jason immediately moved beside me without a word.

The intensive care room felt unbearably quiet compared to the chaos outside.

Machines beeped steadily around my grandfather’s bed while tubes and monitors surrounded him from every direction.

Seeing him unconscious like that physically hurt.

His skin looked pale beneath the hospital lights.

His breathing shallow.

For the first time in my life-

He looked old.

I moved toward the bed slowly before carefully taking his hand.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered before I could stop myself.

Sorry for bringing him here.

Sorry for not noticing sooner.

Sorry for walking us directly into this nightmare.

A hand touched my shoulder gently.

Jason.

I closed my eyes briefly, breathing shakily.

Then something inside me finally settled.

Not grief.

Not fear.

Something colder.

Sharper.

Resolve.

Because this could not continue.

Not anymore.

The Vincents poisoned my grandfather.

Tried to erase him the same way they erased countless others throughout history.

Quietly.

Strategically.

Like human lives were merely obstacles standing In the path of their control.

No.

I looked down at my grandfather’s unconscious figure while the note burned inside my memory again.

We never really left.

My fingers tightened slowly around his hand.

Then I looked toward Jason.

And for the first time since this began-

I stopped thinking about survival.

“It’s time to end them,” I whispered.

I kissed my grandfather’s forehead gently before leaving the intensive care room.

His skin felt cold beneath my lips.

Not lifeless.

Not yet.

But fragile enough to make something violent settle inside my chest.

The machines continued beeping steadily behind me as the doors closed softly.

Outside, the hospital hallway remained crowded with guards, executives, doctors, and police officers moving in controlled chaos around the secured wing.

The Asher board stood immediately the moment they saw me exit.

Every single one of them searching my face for answers I did not have.

“He’s stable for now,” I said quietly.

Relief spread through the hallway again, though nobody fully relaxed.

Because stable did not mean safe.

Not anymore.

The governor stepped closer carefully.

He looked exhausted now, his suit wrinkled, eyes shadowed from stress and sleeplessness.

“Miss Asher,” he said gently, “you should rest for a moment.”

I almost laughed at that.

Rest.
