never stopped
Amber POV
The Vincents were trying to repeat history.
That realization settled inside me like ice.
Not metaphorically.
Not symbolically.
Literally.
They were rebuilding the exact same structure that had once gotten their bloodline exiled from an entire country.
Taking heirs.
Manipulating noble families.
Controlling powerful bloodlines through marriage, fear, dependency and carefully engineered loyalty.
The horrifying part was not how impossible it sounded.
The horrifying part was that we already had proof it was happening.
Iris.
Jason.
The Bloom girls.
The children hidden inside luxury apartments.
The Beckers.
The Vinnys.
If someone had told me all this a year ago, I would have laughed in their face.
Not because it sounded ridiculous.
Because it sounded too ridiculous to survive in modern society.
But powerful people rarely disappeared.
They simply adapted.
A terrifying thought crossed my mind then.
Was this only happening in our country?
Or had the Vincents already succeeded elsewhere?
Shadowland Country.
The neighboring economic empire constantly fighting for international influence and trade control.
The same country where the Vincent family held massive political and financial power.

Had they already won there?
idea sounded insane if you ignored the scale of what they had already accomplished.
But once you saw the pattern…
Once you understood how deeply they infiltrated systems…
It stopped sounding insane very quickly.
We were little mice moving through a maze they built generations ago.
Puppets tied to invisible strings while they convinced themselves they alone dictated the movement of entire nations.
I felt sick.
Actually sick.
Jason must have noticed the exact moment the realization overwhelmed me because his hand immediately found mine.
Then, without saying anything, he pulled me gently against him.
The warmth of his arms grounded me almost instantly.
“It’s alright,” he murmured quietly near my hair.
No.
It really wasn’t.
But I appreciated the effort anyway.
I took a slow breath before looking back toward the governor.
I carefully softened my expression, pretending this information shocked me far less than it actually did.
“Oh wow,” I said quietly. “I had no idea this was something of this scale.”
That part, at least, was true.
I glanced back toward the massive staircase rising through the castle halls.
“If this castle and land didn’t belong to the Vincents…”
I paused.
“Who did it belong to?”
The mayor smiled faintly.
“Oh,” he replied casually, “the Ember family.”
The name sent a strange chill through me again.
“They left shortly after the Vincents were exiled,” the governor explained. “Wanted a completely fresh start away from politics and blood feuds.”
I frowned slightly.

“They abandoned all of this?”
The governor nodded once.
“According to historical records, the Ember family believed the land carried too much pain after what happened.”
A pause.
“So they disappeared.”
Disappeared.
Not died out.
Not destroyed.
Gone.

Almost unnaturally quickly.

Jason signed the final documents beside me with calm precision.

“You should have led with the haunted castle rumors,” he muttered dryly. “Amber would have purchased it even faster.” 1
“That is slander,” I informed him immediately.
Jason looked entirely unconvinced.

The moment ownership transferred officially, the atmosphere around us shifted strangely.
Sabtly.
But enough that I noticed it immediately.
The workers relaxed.
The governor smiled more genuinely.
Even the police escorts looked oddly satisfied.
As if something heavy had finally settled into place correctly.
