Ever since Starla returned to Maxlandia, Herbert knew the biggest obstacle wouldn't just be keeping her safe from Yardley. It was Elmer. In the patriarch's eyes, Herbert was utterly unworthy of his daughter.
The absolute finality of it all was agonizing. Herbert opened his messaging app, typing out a desperate text to her. But after a few seconds, he backspaced the entire paragraph. She didn't want to read it. She hated these emotional displays; she had made that perfectly clear in Smaro Town.
