After refusing Jennifer’s unreasonable request, Joseph considered drawing some information out of Frank. Just then, Joseph saw Theodore enter the ward, leaving him no opportunity.

Aside from that, someone from the critical care ward came looking for Joseph. He had to take charge of the rescue effort. The patient was admitted to the hospital in the early morning and was suffering from late-stage liver cancer. He had undergone surgery in another city last year, but the cancer had returned.

Joseph wasn’t a miracle worker. Even though he managed to pull the patient back from the brink of death, he told the family clearly that it wasn’t a long-term solution and that the patient could pass away at any time.

Right now, the most important thing the family should do was spend whatever time remained with the patient. The family accepted the reality and only hoped that Joseph could buy enough time for the patient to finish his will.

Joseph could do that. Using acupuncture therapy, he temporarily helped the patient regain consciousness and speak normally. The family immediately brought in a lawyer and completed the will.

At 4:00 pm, the patient said that he was tired and closed his eyes, never opening them again. The family didn’t blame Joseph. On the contrary, they thanked him repeatedly. Yet, he couldn’t bring himself to feel relieved even though the patient and the family had gotten what they wanted.

“They can face life and death with such acceptance, but I can’t let go of the past. Is life and death really the greatest?” Joseph wondered. 1

When Joseph returned to his office, he found Cora waiting inside. She requested and ordered, “Honey, you have to come home with me tonight!”

Seeing his straight face, she added, “For the kids. They’ve been missing you terribly. If you don’t come home, they’ll start causing trouble again.”

It was the same old tactic, but Joseph ultimately agreed.

In the car, Joseph asked, “Warren is dead. What do you think about that?”

“Honey, what do I have to do to convince you that there was never that kind of relationship between Warren and me?” Cora replied with a frown. Of course, she wouldn’t admit it.

Joseph stated, “You two soaked in a milk bath. If you insist nothing happened, fine then. Now that he’s dead, you’re even less likely to admit anything. If I press on, you’ll probably tell me that we should respect the dead and stop talking about it.

Joseph pressed on, “Was it karma catching up to him? Did he think stealing another man’s wife wouldn’t come with consequences? Or was he just sacrificed in the power struggle between you and the people from Croma?”

Cora was a bit irritated. “Honey, can we not talk about this? I spent all day dealing with the conflict between Lowell Group and New World Group. My head is already about to explode. Now, you’re bringing this up too. You can’t help with any of it either.

“Let’s go back to how things used to be. You handle your work, and I handle mine. We don’t interfere with each other’s jobs. We work separately, and then we come home and live our lives together.”

Warren’s death was only the beginning. The powerful figures from Croma were lunatics. They had already begun retaliating. For years, the Jenton and Croma factions had maintained a delicate balance. Now, the New World Group’s fire and Warren’s death had shattered that balance.

Joseph laughed. “Your work? By work, do you mean working at Lowell Group? Does it include giving birth to three children who aren’t mine? Does it include sleeping with Warren and other men? Your work is awesome!”

Upon hearing that, Cora was displeased. She wanted to kick Joseph out of the car. Nonetheless, she knew he would get out if she stopped the car. Once he left, getting him to come home again would be nearly impossible.
