Mavis didn’t press Joseph either and instead found his response reassuring. If he had immediately agreed and hurried off to meet Grace after receiving Mavis’ implicit approval, she would have looked down on him instead.

Still, she couldn’t interfere in Joseph’s marriage. After exchanging a few words about medical insights, she let Joseph leave the room.

When Grace entered the room, Mavis said, “I like Joseph more and more as time goes by. Don’t let this chance slip away. Of course, you’re bound to face many obstacles.”

“I get it. Cora is not just anybody. At this point, she still refuses to give up on Joseph. No one knows how far things will escalate between them.

“Of course, Joseph will have to suffer through all of this. Since we’re outsiders, we can’t interfere in his relationship.

“Otherwise, how would that make us any different from Cora?” Grace asked. She secretly wondered if Mavis had just spoken to Joseph about her. She wondered what he thought of her too.

Judging from Mavis’ expression, it was likely something positive.

“I’m glad you see it that way. How are things over at New World Group? They still won’t let you get involved?”

“With Zachary and his wife around, I don’t even get a say in this. In fact, it might be better for them to handle things in Jenton.”

“I’m afraid they’ll go too far! It’s not as though there are no opponents in Jenton,” Mavis said casually, remaining calm as ever.

Since Grace was around, Mavis decided to take a nap.

Joseph was as busy as ever. In the evening, he was about to get off work when Helen showed up again.

Before he could even say a word, Helen spoke first. “Selena hasn’t seen you in a while, and she’s been refusing to eat all day. If you don’t come home, I’ll have to bring her here and put her on an IV drip.”

“Can’t Cora handle her?” Joseph frowned. Why was it always his daughters causing trouble?

“If she could, would I even be here? Joseph, I know you’re not a heartless man. Can’t you come home for just one night? Think of the house as a hotel,” Helen said, her tone gentler than usual.

If Helen failed to convince Joseph to return home and something happened to Selena, she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.

Joseph sighed inwardly. Still, he packed up his things before returning to Cora’s home.

Kimberly was delighted to see Joseph. She had no idea about Joseph’s situation at home and still believed he had gone away on a business trip.

She put down her toys and ran toward him, yelling “Dad”, her joy impossible to hide.

Joseph stared at Kimberly, and he couldn’t help but think of Brooke, who was only a few years older. Perhaps he had spoiled Kimberly too much and should have raised her to be like Brooke-someone who was resilient, thick- skinned, and sly. She would never be taken advantage of in the real world.

Of course, Brooke had done plenty. She tried to set Rosalie up with Joseph and even drugged her in the process, not to mention her complete lack of basic knowledge.

Any parent with a child like Brooke would be driven to an early grave.

“There’s a risk of paralysis, and her kidneys are failing too. If this keeps up, she will develop edema. Despite everything, she’s held on for so many years and still wants to live on.

“I want you to help me make a choice. If you’d rather she die, I won’t go save her, and I’ll stay with you. If you want her to live, I’ll head over to the hospital now to save her.”

Selena lowered her head. She would never win either way, and she didn’t dare make a decision. All she said was, If you go save her, will you still come back tonight?”

“If that’s your answer, it means you know right from wrong and how to take responsibility. It shows you’ve matured, and I’m glad to hear that! As for the surgery, no one knows what will happen.

“If I’m not back by 11:00 pm, just go to bed. If you don’t see me tomorrow morning, then I’m not a man of my word.”

Selena lowered her head, refusing to say a word.

But Kimberly reached out for Joseph’s hand and said, “Dad, pinky promise. I want to see you tomorrow morning when I wake up.”

Joseph made a pinky promise with Kimberly. With that, he quickly finished his meal, grabbed his briefcase, and left the house.

Cora hurried after him, following him to the car and saying, “Honey, thank you so much. Selena only listens to you. Without you, we can’t even handle her.”

Joseph scowled and replied flatly, “Go back inside. I’m in a hurry.”

“Don’t stand us up tonight. The kids and I will be waiting for you. This is your real home!”
