A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 221

Chapter 221

Warren’s mistress didn’t know the identity of the other man. According to her, Warren only brought it up briefly to spice things up before they were intimate Once they were finished, he never mentioned it again.

“Why do you want his phone so badly?” Joseph asked. “You said yourself it’s just an old basic phone. Besides making calls, what use could it possibly have?”

Joseph knew he wouldn’t get the answers he wanted that easily. If Cora’s infidelity had been obvious and out in the open, the news would have leaked to high society long ago. Warren might have seen Cora with another man, but that didn’t mean he had actually witnessed her sleeping with someone.

Despite that, the fact that Cora and Warren had gone to a hot spring resort together was enough to convince him that something was going on between them. No matter how convincing this woman sounded, he couldn’t fully trust her.

When she hesitated to answer, Joseph continued, “You might claim that you’re Warren’s mistress, but his wife is at the hospital right now. The hospital has to release his personal effects to her. Otherwise, the hospital will be held liable if she causes a scene.

“Besides, how do I know you’re not planning to use the phone for something illegal? If that happens and an investigation happens down the line, I’ll be dragged right into it.”

The mistress clenched her jaw, her calculated demeanor cracking before she finally told the truth.

“Warren promised to leave some money for Charles and me. Now that he’s fallen and suffered a brain injury, I’m terrified he’ll wake up with amnesia and forget what he promised.

“If that happens, our future will be at risk. There’s a number stored in his phone that is the password to a bank account. I need it to access the money.”

Joseph studied her for a moment and decided to believe her for the time being. He took down her contact information before heading up to the inpatient ward to make the arrangements.

Fortunately, Warren’s phone truly was a relic. Jennifer hadn’t cared for it and left it in a bag with his personal belongings. Joseph arranged for the mistress to disguise herself as a nurse and cleverly distracted the caregivers. Then, she quickly memorized the numbers she needed.

“I found a cheap motel that doesn’t require ID and have just been making do. Pretty pathetic, isn’t it?” Joseph replied casually, making sure not to expose Lacey.

“You’re lying, but I’m not going to pry into your private business. If you really don’t want to go home, you can come to me. I’ll arrange somewhere for you to stay. I’m capable of avoiding Cora’s people these days,” Grace said.

“I’ll remember that. If Tever find myself with nowhere to go for the night, I’ll take you up on that. Besides that, is there anything else you need?” Joseph asked.

“My main concern is you. I don’t really care if Frank or Warren wakes up,” Grace replied.

“That wasn’t exactly a subtle hint. Don’t worry. There won’t be any problems on my end.” Joseph understood what Grace was implying. Grace’s men had attacked Warren. As long as he remained comatose, her people were entirely shielded from a criminal investigation.

Just then, Joseph’s phone rang. It was the director of the inpatient department. He was asked to join a consultation immediately. Since Warren still hadn’t regained consciousness after an entire night, they had performed another brain scan and discovered signs of intracranial bleeding.
