Chapter 219
“What happened to Warren?” Joseph asked Paige the moment he returned to the hospital.
“Word is he fell in one of the stairwells in the inpatient wing. He tumbled down a flight and cracked his head against the wall. That knocked him out cold on the spot. Paige relayed the information she had managed to gather.
Joseph immediately had a clear picture of what had actually gone down. Someone had almost certainly lured Warren into that blind spot and given him a hard shove.
After reviewing Warren’s charts and doing a quick walk-by of his room, Joseph could practically visualize the assault. If Warren hadn’t completely lost consciousness from the initial tumble, his attacker had likely followed him down the steps to deliver a final, crushing blow against the concrete.
Of course, the hospital administration would never admit to that. They would insist that Warren fell down the stairs himself. If they acknowledged an assault, it would be a public relations nightmare-one major incident right after another, stretching from the drama with Walt and Yvette to Warren’s assault. The state board would inevitably launch an investigation, and every department head would be under the microscope.
Warren would have to stay unconscious for a while. As for exactly when the man would wake up, that would depend entirely on how Joseph played his cards. He had his own plans and no intention of letting Warren off easily.
When the multidisciplinary consultation meeting began, Joseph finally met Jennifer Sanders, Warren’s wife. She was an undeniably striking woman with a soft, round face and a tall, exceptionally voluptuous figure.
Warren had multiple women outside, yet somehow still managed to satisfy a woman like that. How exactly did he do that?
Joseph couldn’t help but recall Wendy’s comments about Warren’s skill at pleasing women. Perhaps the man had an arsenal of techniques in addition to an impressive size and a golden tongue. Anyway, there were countless ways for a man to study the art of seduction.
“But honestly, I probably want him to wake up more than you do. I’m waiting for him to admit what went down between him and Cora so I can finally push my divorce through.”
Since Jennifer brought up the topic herself, Joseph saw no reason to hold back. “Do you know anything about their relationship? If you have evidence of them fooling around together, give it to me. I’ll use it in the divorce proceedings.”
Jennifer shook her head. “I know he has plenty of lovers, but I don’t know whether your wife is one of them. After the scene you caused at Lowell Group, the rumors about him and Cora are practically treated as fact now. When he wakes up, I’ll be filing for divorce:
“If he’s managed to latch onto a wealthy woman like Cora, then I want every single asset currently tied to his name. He won’t leave our marriage with a dime, and he’ll be paying child support for our kids every month. I’ll make sure of that.
“When his eyes finally opened, Dr. Hart, make damn sure I’m the very first person you notify.”
