Chapter 133
After getting off work at noon, Joseph arrived at Jenton Grand Hotel for his lunch appointment. Only then did he discover that the woman who had invited him was exceptionally beautiful.
Still, he didn’t harbor any inappropriate thoughts. He wasn’t the type of man who lost his mind at the sight of a pretty face. Besides, he knew exactly who she was. She was Mavis’ daughter-in-law.
“Dr. Hart, you’re here. Please, have a seat.” The woman welcomed him warmly and politely.
She was clearly an extraordinary woman. Joseph studied her expression and bearing, and everything about her suggested that she was sharp and capable. Then again, no ordinary person would have made it into Mavis’ family, nor would the old lady have trusted just anyone to represent her in Jenton.
Her name suited her perfectly. It was Grace Summers.
The gift Mavis had sent turned out to be a set of silver needles. They weren’t new, but judging by their appearance and craftsmanship, they were clearly a collector’s item.
Joseph asked, “Is there some hidden medical expert in your husband’s or your family?”
Grace shook her head. “Not at all. Most of our relatives are in business or politics. Even those who entered academia focused on social sciences, economics, and similar fields. No one practices medicine.
Joseph nodded. “Then this set isn’t much use to your family, and it probably isn’t worth much either. But it’s useful to me, so I’ll accept it. Of course, I can’t just take it for free. I have a project proposal here for you.”
Joseph took out a proposal he had drafted long ago for a new energy project in Jenton. It wasn’t professionally prepared, and without startup capital, the project had remained nothing more than an idea.
Grace read through it carefully. “Dr. Hart, you have a real talent for writing, and your market instincts are impressive. If you weren’t a doctor, I’m sure you could have been a successful businessman.”
When she said nothing further, Jenton frowned slightly. “You don’t seem very interested. Is it because Jenton is too far from Croma? Or is it because the market is too small?”
Grace set the proposal down. “It’s neither. If this project succeeds, it could generate a billion in profit. That’s hardly a small opportunity. But you said it yourself, it’s Jenton.”
Joseph was confused. “And what’s wrong with Jenton? You’re obviously hiding something. Just tell me.”
Grace shot him a meaningful look. “The Lowells are a part of it, but other families are involved as well. Joseph, you’re so devoted to medicine that you ignore everything else. Otherwise, after living with the Lowells for so many years, you would’ve noticed how the game is played here.”
Joseph shrugged. “Fine, I’ll admit that I’m ignorant. Can you answer two more questions? What position does the Lowell family hold in Jenton? And how much of Cora’s reputation as the richest woman in
Jenton is real?”
Grace said, “The Lowells rank in the top five in Jenton. Or if you want to be more conservative, they’re at least in the top ten. As for your wife, I’m not too sure. But before I came here, some people did warn me about her. They said that even if I interacted with you, I should never offend her.”
“So does that mean that Jenton is a fortress?” Joseph frowned. He wanted to make Cora and her lover pay for what they had done, but now it seemed that it would be far more difficult than he had expected.
Grace replied, “It used to be like that. Plenty of people have tried to enter Jenton to claim a piece of the pie, but most left with nothing to show for it.” 1
A faint smile appeared on her lips. “But now that Cora has shown such blatant disrespect for you, she’s exposed a weakness. Joseph, if strangers start approaching you in the future, you need to be very careful.”
