That night, Cora found their intimacy just as satisfying and intense as it had always been. By the next morning, however, the warmth had vanished; Joseph had already left the villa, not even bothering to say goodbye.

When Cora asked Ella about him, she learned that Joseph barely spoke to Ella at all, only telling her to do the laundry.

After thinking for a moment, she sent him a message.

“You were gone when I woke up. Where did you run off to?”

“What’s up?”

“You didn’t get back until the middle of the night last night, and now you’re leaving first thing in the morning. It’s been like this for a while now. Are you treating this house as a hotel? Honey, you need to put more effort and time into this family.”

“You’ve been busy just like this for over ten years. I know you’ll say you’re doing it for the family, and I won’t deny that. I’m almost at the hospital. We can talk tonight.”

Joseph’s unwillingness to talk left Cora with a dull, suffocating feeling inside. She loved being pampered by Joseph, but ever since he started suspecting Natalie wasn’t his, he hadn’t shown her that affection anymore.

She asked Fiona to come pick her up on her way to work.

“Fiona, how’s the investigation going?”

“Marla went to Horba and then vanished without a trace. The people I sent still haven’t found her. As for Sharon, everything seems to be normal. Same with Nat,” Fiona quickly reported, though she felt uneasy inside.

It had been days, and aside from rehashing Joseph’s old findings about Marla, she had made no real progress.

Cora’s expression remained calm and unfathomable, a clear sign of dissatisfaction with Fiona’s work. Pushing her luck, Fiona said, “Cora, actually, this whole thing started because of Joseph. He’s the one who set everything in motion.

“If he stays quiet, the situation stays stagnant. So, I think we should provoke him a bit. Only if he starts making waves can we get this stalled investigation moving again.”

The person who walked in turned out to be a member of the Ashmore family, Ernest’s youngest son, Dylan Ashmore.

“I’ve examined your father. He’s still in the same condition as before. Things are still not looking good. You really should listen to me and transfer him to Croma Hospital,” Joseph said before Dylan could speak.

“I’ve already contacted them. The doctors there said your medical skills are superior and told us to trust you.”

Dylan actually wanted to come right out and say that after Joseph had performed those two conjoined- twin separation surgeries with his god-tier skills, no one at that hospital believed they could compare to him. So, there was no way they would accept a patient transferred out of his care.

“Dr. Hart, if you can wake my father up, I will do anything you ask. Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do it without any hesitation.”

“I can’t promise I can wake your father up, but I can at least keep him alive. Since you’re being so sincere, I won’t stand on ceremony. Help me find this woman!”

Joseph took the opportunity to ask Dylan to investigate the mysterious woman who had slept with him in the hospital dormitory.
