Lucian rushed over, looking completely frantic. "Lemmy, I swear I had everything locked down tight. I have no idea how the news of Evelina's death got out."

Asher frowned deeply. "Lemira, this is obviously a setup. A leak like this doesn't just happen by accident."

Caspian tried to smooth things over. "Asher is right. We put a gag order on the major outlets. They wouldn't just publish this without warning. To suddenly blast a story accusing us of murdering her? That's impossible."

Hearing Caspian's logic, Lemira's initial fury cooled slightly. "You're saying someone orchestrated this from the shadows?"

Caspian nodded. "I can't say for sure who, but for a story to break this fast and trend this aggressively, someone is definitely pushing it behind the scenes."

Taking a steadying breath, Lemira realized he was right.

Sebastian interjected, his tone tight. "If it were just a media circus, we'd be fine. But a lawyer just arrived at the courthouse. He claims to be Evelina's proxy attorney, and he's submitting new evidence."

"Evelina's attorney? Who hired him?"

Knowing Evelina, that two-faced girl never possessed the foresight to arrange something like this.

Sebastian shook his head, glancing at the Langston brothers. "That's a question for them."

Lucian looked utterly bewildered. "Where would Evelina get the money for a lawyer? And my financial agreement with her was contingent on the verdict. Now that she's dead, she couldn't possibly have organized this."

Rowan crossed his arms. "Then she didn't organize it."

"Who was it?"

"They're on it. We'll have an answer shortly."

"Can we pull any background on this new lawyer?" Lemira asked.

Lemira forced a bitter smile. "But this is going to affect Amelia's chance at the death penalty, isn't it?"

Sebastian nodded slowly. "Yes. There's nothing we can do about that."

A knot of bitter resentment tightened in Lemira's chest. She wanted Amelia to pay with her life.
