Lemira was taken aback by Rowan's assessment. "Are you sure they're not human ashes?"
Evander exploded, "Are you telling me that bitch Evelina is still alive?!"
"Not necessarily," Caspian reasoned. "It's just that the ashes delivered here don't belong to her. The mastermind isn't stupid enough to hand us Evelina's actual remains knowing full well we'd destroy them."
Lemira's thoughts perfectly aligned with Caspian's logic.
The enemy certainly wasn't an idiot. If they were, they wouldn't have remained safely hidden for so many years.
She stared at Evelina's fake ashes scattered across the concrete and clicked her tongue. "So we walked into a trap? We just put on a show for them?"
Rowan stood back up. "It doesn't matter. It just proves she's only capable of playing cheap parlor tricks."
Caspian scoffed. "Exactly. She's nothing but a coward hiding in her shell."
Lemira nodded. "Pretty much. Only the weak and guilty rely on endless smoke and mirrors."
She looked back up at the security camera, her gaze as cold as frost.
On the other side of that camera feed, someone was naturally watching the entire scene unfold.
A woman lounged on a sofa. She carelessly tossed the tablet aside and picked up her coffee cup for a slow sip.
The man standing beside her bristled with indignation. "Madam, are you really going to tolerate their insolence? They actually had the audacity to desecrate the young lady's urn!"
"It was a fake anyway. What are you getting so worked up about?"
"I just can't stomach this humiliation. If they didn't have the Everhart family backing them, you could crush them with the snap of your fingers."
The woman set her cup down. "You don't understand. A woman's ability to conquer a powerful man is a formidable weapon in itself. Taking them down right now wouldn't be easy, and it would only interfere with my grander plans."
"So we're just going to let this slide?"
"Of course not. That girl is currently riding high on her success. There's no need to attack her directly. There are countless ways to break a person's spirit. As long as she has weaknesses, it will be incredibly easy."
