Adora walked to the door but turned back at the sound of their voices. “You just can’t wait to kick me out of this house.”
“Adora, Mom means well. She’s worried about you. Why do you always twist her intentions?” Ruby spoke with frustration.
Adora let out a cold laugh, too tired to argue.
She got in her car and left.
She drove to the nearest supermarket, bought some sanitary pads, and went straight to the restroom to change.
The painkiller hadn’t done much.
The heaviness in her lower abdomen was getting worse, spreading down to her legs.
They were weak and trembling, and her knees felt hollow, as if they might collapse at any moment.
Every step felt like her body was falling apart.
She managed to get back to the car and tossed the shopping bag inside.
Taking out her phone, she meant to call Laura.
But before she could dial, a wave of dizziness hit her.
Just before everything went black, she saw someone rushing toward her and catching her in his arms.
“Adora! Adora!”
Eugene held her tightly, calling her name over and over, panic in his voice.
Adora slowly came to, though the dizziness still lingered.
“Adora, what’s wrong?” Eugene asked, seeing her eyes flutter open, concern etched all over his face.
When she realized it was Eugene, a surge of bitterness rose in her chest.
“I’m fine…”
She pushed him away, trying to get up on her own.
But her body just wouldn’t cooperate.
Eugene was torn.
The past two days, Ruby told him that Adora’s condition had worsened so much she could barely get out of bed.
He was actually driving to the Matthews’ estate just to check on her.
“Uncle Louis… can you come over? I need your help… No, it’s not me. It’s Ruby’s sister, you’ve met her before… She’s having a serious flare-up, it’s bad… Uncle Louis, please, just come take a look, I don’t know who else to turn to…”
Adora heard the call from the back seat and frowned.
“I don’t need a doctor… I’m not dying. It’ll pass in a few days…”
Eugene ignored her and kept pleading with his uncle over the phone.
After he hung up, he glanced at the rearview mirror and reassured her, “Adora, my uncle isn’t just anyone. He won’t judge you.”
Adora didn’t respond.
Pain surged through her again.
She collapsed in the back seat, her mind fading into a fog from the agony.
Louis had worked the night shift and was resting at home that morning.
Dragged out by his nephew’s urgent call, he looked annoyed as he arrived.
Eugene stood by the car and rushed up as soon as Louis stepped out, his expression tense.
“Uncle, please check on her, she’s passed out again!”
