"Mister, we are in the twenty-first century, yet you're still living in the Dark Ages. So what if Xanthe can't have kids? How does that humiliate the Sutton family?" Amber shot back sharply.
Damien's face flushed with embarrassment. "What does a little kid like you know? A woman who can't bear children is a disgrace! It's an absolute humiliation!"
One of the women in the crowd scoffed, "Do you have a royal throne to pass down? Who cares if she can't have kids? Without her taking care of you, would you even be alive today? Ungrateful? The Sutton family takes the cake for that."
"Oh my god, I thought she committed some heinous crime. A brother beats his sister half to death just because she's barren? This is the most ridiculous thing I've heard all year. Look at how you act—you're just bottom-feeders. A brother who doesn't protect his sister and airs her medical privacy in public? Wow, your family rules are *so* impressive."
"I spit on you! It's downright shameful. Is it solely her fault she can't have kids? If you ask me, did you even take her ex-husband to the doctor to get checked? And what's even funnier is she's only been here a few days, waking up at the crack of dawn to sell boxed lunches. Stealing men? Ruining families?"
"Stop making a fool of yourself. The guy Loretta set her up with is standing right in front of you, and his daughter is here too! Arthur, when did you get married without telling the neighborhood?"
"You didn't even ask for the truth before throwing punches. I can completely picture it now: you used the excuse of keeping her from 'embarrassing' the family just to exploit and enslave her! Because she's barren, you felt perfectly justified making her serve your family for fifteen years."
"I spit on you! I've seen disgusting people, but never anyone this revolting. You enslaved her for fifteen years without a single word of gratitude, acting like it's your God-given right. Is your face made of gold?"
"It must be made of iron, seeing how thick-skinned he is. Look at this guy, neighbors! His family does something this vile, and he still acts so self-righteous. So mediocre, yet so confident."
"I spit on you!"
"I spit on you!"
"I spit on you!"
Damien's face turned into a colorful kaleidoscope, flashing from red to pale white. The neighbors helped Xanthe up and stood in a protective line. "Don't be afraid of him, Xanthe. The barefooted don't fear the shoed! With a family like that, you should be begging them to kick you out of their registry. You can't afford to serve them."
"Exactly! What decent woman would marry into a family like that? Anyone who would isn't a good person either. You have your own two hands, working hard to sell lunches. Why let these bloodsuckers ruin you?"
Damien was dumbfounded. "Are you tricking me?"
Amber laughed. "Do you think your family is worth billions, making me lie to you? Mr. Sutton, someone played you. Beating your sister to death or causing severe injury will land you in prison. Even if it's a short sentence, you'll still do time."
Damien refused to concede. "But the person who came told me your dad has had a lover for twelve years! They've been inseparable and deeply in love. Just because Xanthe showed up, your dad changed. She ruined that woman's family!"
Hearing this, Amber knew with absolute certainty that Grace had orchestrated this. But how did Grace know where Xanthe lived?
*Lucian Juarez. To let your mother control my dad, you really play a dirty game.*
They had agreed to stay out of each other's way, but in the end, it was more important for him to have someone wait on them hand and foot.
"Oh? Did that person tell you if she and my dad actually got married?"
