Amber arrived in the alley on a motorcycle, only to see her father pinned to the ground and being pummeled by Damien.
Xanthe sat off to the side, her face covered in blood, trying to tell her brother to stop, but she could barely make a sound.
A few neighbors were trying to pull them apart, getting bruised in the process.
Furious, Amber grabbed a nearby wooden stick and yelled, "Carter, Wallace, step aside. Let me handle this."
Before Carter and Wallace could even register her arrival, Amber swung the stick hard right into Damien's back.
"Let go of my dad, you bastard!"
Thwack!
Amber put every ounce of her strength into the blow. Even though Damien had a thick skin, her strike was enough to make him wince. And Amber didn't just swing once—she struck him at least five more times.
Xanthe had done hard labor for years, but a woman's strength naturally couldn't compare to a man's. Sitting paralyzed on the ground, covered in blood, it was clear she had been beaten severely.
Although her father fought back, he was only trying to defend himself. He wasn't a fighter, and he certainly couldn't match Damien, who was clearly used to dealing out violence.
The stick in Amber's hands finally snapped. Damien let out a pig-like squeal. Fearing Damien might attack Amber next, Carter and Wallace rushed to shield her, shouting, "We've already called the cops! If you don't want to go to jail, get out of here!"
Damien was used to this. During Xanthe's fifteen years with the Sutton family, the cops were called every time she was beaten, but it always ended in 'mediation,' which only fueled his audacity.
"I already told you, the cops won't do anything. This is a family matter. Xanthe, are you going to let these people beat up your own brother?"
Xanthe's eyes were brimming with tears. Before she could speak, Amber spat, "You almost beat her to death, and you still call yourself her brother?"
"Exactly! What kind of brother are you? I've never seen such a scumbag. Even if the cops can't do anything, we'll beat you to a pulp ourselves!"
"And now you're acting like the victim? Who can we complain to? A while ago, my cousin Loretta came over and arranged a match for her. The whole family was thrilled, thinking she'd finally settle down. But instead, she conspired with Loretta to steal another woman's man and destroy her family!"
"Xanthe, the woman came crying to our door! You embarrassed us all over again, and you still refuse to come back with me? If you want to die, don't drag the Sutton family down with you!"
The moment Damien thought about Grace showing up at their door crying, making the entire village laugh at them, he felt his pride shatter. He drove Grace all the way to this alley to take Xanthe back. The Sutton family couldn't afford this kind of humiliation. He just didn't expect so many people to get in the way, nor did he expect Xanthe to stubbornly refuse to go back.
How dare she!
Amber finally understood why Damien had suddenly shown up. Someone had tipped him off.
*Heh.* Amber's eyes flashed with cold realization as she scanned the area. Grace immediately ducked out of sight. Even if she was the one who brought him here, Damien didn't have her contact info, and since she had vanished the moment they reached the alley, he couldn't point her out.
*Hah! This Xanthe bitch thought she was so great. Turns out she's barren. Heaven is truly on my side.*
