I woke up with a headache that felt like someone had driven a spike through my skull. My eyes opened to an unfamiliar ceiling, high and vaulted, with a chandelier that probably cost more than my entire house. I was lying on a sofa so soft I could have sunk into it and disappeared, and the room around me was enormous, decorated in shades of cream and gold, with paintings on the walls that looked like originals!

I sat up slowly, my hand going to my throbbing head, and that was when I saw him.

He was tall and broad-shouldered, dressed in a suit that fit him like it had been sewn onto his body, with dark hair slicked back and eyes that were sharp and assessing and undeniably amused. He walked into the room with the confidence of a man who owned everything he could see, including me.

“You are awake,” he said, his voice deep and smooth, the kind of voice that could talk you into anything.

“What is going on here?” I asked. “Who are you? Why was I brought here?”

“I apologize if my men handled you roughly. That was not my instruction.”

I stared at him, trying to place where I had seen him before. There was something familiar about him, something nagging at the back of my mind that I could not quite grasp.

He smiled, showing perfect teeth. “I am Emerson Gath. You have probably heard of me. I am the only heir of Senator Gath.”

My breath caught in my throat. Senator Gath. One of the most powerful men in the country. And this was his son. The heir to an empire of influence and money and connections that dwarfed even Dominic’s. I swallowed and asked, “Why did you have me kidnapped? What do you want from me?”

“I want you.”

I stared at him, certain I had misheard. “What?”
