“Do not worry,” he said. “Celeste is my sister. I will deal with her. I give you my word.”

“Please help me, Felix. She is going to destroy me.”

“I will handle it.”

He was out the door in under a minute, his footsteps echoing down the hallway as he rushed off to confront his sister on my behalf. I watched him go, and when the door clicked shut behind him, I let out a long breath and said to the empty room, “Oh my God, it is almost too easy.”

I went back to my phone, refreshing, waiting, counting down the minutes until noon. fell asleep with my phone in my hand, the screen still glowing, the news still empty of the headline I wanted.

The ringing pulled me out of a dream I could not remember. My phone was buzzing against my palm, the screen showing my mother’s name, and I answered with a groggy, “Hello?”

“What have you done?” My mother’s voice was a scream, high and shrill, cutting through the fog in my head like a blade. “What have you done, Seraphine? Your video! It is everywhere! Everyone has seen it! You have been ruined!”

“What are you talking about?”
