Chapter 247

“I hope it helps you relax, said, and I meant it more than he would ever know.

He finished the rest of the juice and set the glass down on the coffee table, leaning back against the couch with a satisfied sigh. I watched him, counting the seconds, waiting for the chemicals to do their work. His eyelids began to droop within minutes, his head nodding forward as the drugs pulled him onder, and within ten minutes he was completely unconscious, his moutli hanging open, a soft snore rattling out of his throat

I stood up and looked down at him, this obstacle I had temporarily removed from my path, and I said aloud to no one in particular, “Finally. Some freedom from this idiot.”

The night was still young, and I had work to do. 1

I drove back to Helix with my hands steady on the wheel and my mind running through the plan I had pieced together in the car. Kingsley had destroyed the video, yes, but Pat did not know that. Pat had slapped me, humiliated me, treated me like I was nothing, and I was not about to let that go unanswered. I parked in the lot across from the Helix building, pulled out my phone, and called Pat. It rang and rang and went to voicemail. I called again. Same result. I smiled, put the phone away, and sent her a text message instead.

I leaned against my car and waited, counting the seconds in my head, watching the entrance to the building like a hawk. She came rushing out, her face pale, her eyes wide with panic, exactly the way I knew she would. She spotted me and hurried over, her hands shaking at her sides. Once I was done with Pat, I left.

The drive home was a blur of streetlights and satisfaction. I had Pat exactly where I wanted her. She would do whatever I asked now. She would burn down Helix. She would destroy Celeste’s dream with her own two hands. And when she did, I would be there to watch it all burn.

Felix was still unconscious on my couch when I walked in, still snoring, still taking up space in my living room like he had any right to be there. I looked at him and felt a wave of irritation so intense I almost kicked him. But I stopped myself. I was not done with him yet. He still had a use.
